The Liberal Arts department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Musicology / Ethnomusicology, beginning August 2019. The department seeks a scholar whose research focuses on modern and contemporary music. The department has a preference for applicants with a research agenda and teaching competencies in one or more of the following geographical regions and/or their diasporas: Asia, Oceania, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America. Fields of special interest include music and politics; music and technology; music and globalization; gender, sex and music; hip-hop music and performance; performance studies. Rank and salary are competitive with peer institutions and are commensurate with quality of practice, scholarship, academic research, extent of teaching experience, and current professional standing.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Liberal Arts is one of twenty-three departments at SAIC. Liberal Arts provides the academic foundation for undergraduate students’ success at SAIC. The department is chaired by a full-time faculty member with 16 full-time faculty and over 100 part-time faculty. It offers 400 courses each year, primarily to undergraduate students pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art. Liberal Arts’ main credit areas include First Year Seminar, Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Science, Foreign Languages, English for International Students, and the Academic Access Program. Full-time faculty in Liberal Arts teach undergraduate students within the interdisciplinary art and design environment of SAIC. The position involves coordinating and managing the music curriculum within the Liberal Arts department, staffing part-time faculty, and curricular development of, on average, eight courses per semester. In addition to courses in music, the successful candidate will teach in the department's introductory, topics-based writing course, First Year Seminar. Preference will be given to scholars who can teach in an interdisciplinary Liberal Arts department, including courses in music history, theory, or criticism that intersect with other, Humanities, Social Science, or Natural Science disciplines. The successful candidate will contribute to the department and SAIC through ongoing engagement in scholarly and professional activities, other administrative duties and service, including curricular development, and departmental administration and school governance.
A Ph.D. in Musicology, Ethnomusicology, or a related discipline is required. Candidates must show evidence of substantial college/university teaching experience within their area of study as well as a record of robust and ongoing scholarship and/or performance history. The ideal candidate will contribute to the diversity of the School by bringing a perspective, way of thinking, and/or a unique set of experiences that expand the intellectual conversations and practices in the field. We seek candidates with the knowledge and aptitude to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds. Candidates should demonstrate their experience with, or aptitude for, departmental administration.
