After School Matters?is a nonprofit organization that offers Chicago public high school teens high quality, out-of-school-time opportunities to explore and develop their talents, while gaining critical skills for work, college,?and beyond.?Since 1991, more than 200,000 teens have participated in our hands-on, project-based after-school and summer programs in the arts, communications, science, sports and leadership, STEM and sports. Summary of Position:
The Development Manager supports the management and implementation of the overall fundraising strategy for After School Matters. Under the direction of the Senior Manager, of Foundations and Corporations, this position is responsible for the coordination, solicitation and stewardship of a portfolio of current and prospective public, private and corporate foundations. The position will also administer aspects of securing support within this portfolio, to ensure the organization’s financial and programmatic obligations are met. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to grant and proposal writing, mid-term and final reporting, deliverables management, as well as high-profile solicitation and acknowledgement letters.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
In collaboration with the Senior Manager, Foundations & Corporations and the Coordinator of Grants & Foundation Giving, manage, implement, and steward all grants that align and support the After School Matters operational budget and future growth strategies. Maintain regular contact with existing and prospective donors for cultivation and stewardship purposes. Plan, organize, and steward site visits.
Proactively identify, cultivate and solicit proposals, in collaboration with After School Matters leadership, for program and operational support.
Create, update, revise, and manage organizational proposal and reporting language. Develop, edit and submit appropriate, clear and targeted proposals and reports within funder specifications and deadlines. Create and develop high-profile, customized acknowledgment letters.
Oversee internal systems related to grants, including maintaining a calendar of deadlines, supervising proposal development timelines, and managing funder deliverables and the expenditure tracking process. Provide guidance for the Coordinator of Grants & Foundation Giving to implement and maintain these systems. Manage and maintain grants and foundation stewardship to ensure high-quality deliverables and relationships.
Research and develop targeted sponsorship for specific programmatic opportunities. Cultivate new funding opportunities from local, regional and national foundations, and corporations. Manage and integrate external relationships with the Volunteer Coordinator.
Work with development staff, program staff, financial staff, and executive leadership to create narrative, evaluation expectations, and budget components of proposals and reports in a timely and effective manner. Coordinate with Manager of Development Services to ensure accurate reporting and funder deliverables are met.
Advise the Senior Manager, Corporate & Foundations on revenue projection based on known and potential opportunities. Work closely with Finance Department to prepare and edit budgets for submissions and reports.
Maintain regular contact with internal development staff, program staff, financial staff, and executive leadership to ensure high quality project deliverables.
Assist with collection, input, and maintenance of donor information into Raiser’s Edge database, including working with the Manager, Development Services, to ensure records are current and accurate.
Work closely with events team and provide assistance for fundraising events such as the Annual Gala.
Supervise the Coordinator of Grants and Foundation Giving. Assist with other projects as necessary.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Experience successfully cultivating and closing major gifts, developing donor strategies and stewarding public and corporations and foundations.
Considerable experience grant writing, crafting clear narrative, and creating donor acknowledgement communications.
Ability to work and communicate with a wide range of internal constituents including development staff, program staff, financial staff, and executive leadership.
Outstanding written and presentation skills to persuasively convey the mission of After School Matters to diverse external constituencies.
Ability to function independently in a fast-paced, high volume, multi-faceted, results-oriented work environment.
Ability to analyze issues, identify priorities, manage projects and make decisions expeditiously while maintaining a close attention to detail, especially foundation specifications, expectations and deadlines.
Demonstrated strong analytical skills, including an ability to synthesize large amounts of detailed information and to focus quickly on the essence of an issue. Strong commitment to producing measurable results.
B.A. or equivalent combination of training and experience relevant to the job duties.
Minimum of 4–6 years of experience working with local, regional and national foundations and shepherding proposals through to completion.
Supervisory experience preferred.
Excellent Microsoft Office skills. Raiser’s Edge experience preferred.
Cook County residency required.
