Associate Director (Veterans Upward Bound Program)

Suffolk University invites qualified candidates to apply for Associate Director position. This Associate Director position in the Center for Academic Access and Opportunity (CAAO) at Suffolk University is responsible for leading the development and implementation of the Veterans Upward Bound Program (VUB) – a federally-funded TRIO program created to help qualified military veterans develop the necessary skills to enroll and succeed in post-secondary education. Alongside other key program staff, the Associate Director ensures that eligible participants receive individualized educational support services, assistance with college admissions and financial aid planning, access to coursework in key areas such as math, science, composition, computer literacy, and foreign language, and exposure to cultural events and activities. The Associate Director reports to the Director of the Center of Academic Access and Opportunity.
Oversee the day-to-day operations of the program and ensure the delivery of program services and the achievement of program objectives for eligible veteran participants, as outlined in the federal regulations and legislation governing the VUB grant. Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate one full-time professional staff member, as well as, course instructors, tutors, and other necessary part-time personnel that provide required services.
Organize the project's enrichment experiences by providing academic instruction, career development, academic advisement, and opportunities for cultural exposure. Develop working relationships with key offices (Admissions, Registrar's, Financial Aid, etc.) at Suffolk University and other institutions of higher education in order to advocate and support program participants as they prepare for and transition into postsecondary programs.
Assist with the development of the program's recruitment plans and program policies and oversee the selection process of eligible program participants. Serve as the program's key representative and participate in veteran services networks to strengthen relationships with area service providers and bring awareness to the services offered by the program.
Manage program expenses, monitor the grant's budget, and ensure that all travel, purchases, and contracted services comply with institutional and federal budgetary guidelines.
Implement methods to achieve program goals and objectives and ensure the proper management of records and student information systems. Engage in frequent evaluation and assessment of program services and make recommendations about possible applications or collaborations to expand the program's offerings through external funding opportunities. Assist with the preparation and submission of the Annual Performance Report (APR) required by the U.S. Department of Education and prepare other progress and outcome reports for the institution or external partners as needed.
Support other university-related initiatives and/or engage in other duties, as assigned, to further the mission and visibility of the VUB Program and the CAAO where the program is housed.
Master's degree required
A minimum of three (3) years of successful professional experience with a demonstrated commitment to working with adult learners and/or veterans from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds
Direct experience and/or knowledge of financial aid, college admissions, student assessment, and curriculum development, especially as it relates to adult learners
Must have demonstrated capability of being creative, proactive, and a team player, and possess strong organizational, interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
Experience facilitating workshops and trainings and working effectively with diverse populations
Possess a strong understanding of veteran's services, military culture, veteran's benefits, and other veteran socio-economic issues
Flexibility to attend veterans-related events, accompany program participants on college visits, or participate in professional development conferences and trainings in the evening or weekends, on occasion, is required
Military or experience working in veterans' services is strongly preferred
Supervisory experience is strongly preferred
Master's degree or higher, in student affairs, higher education administration, counseling, psychology, adult learning, social work or similar
Experience working with social service agencies and serving clients with psychological and/or substance use and abuse problems
Experience with the development and implementation of new programs and services
Exceptional skill in the management and organization of data and experience in preparing data for annual reporting
Previous experience working with or participating in TRIO (or similar) programs
Familiarity with grant-funded programs and ability to work within federal and state guidelines.
Preference will be given to individuals who have overcome circumstances similar to those of program participants.
This position is grant funded through August 31, 2023. Employment beyond the cycle of the grant is contingent upon a successful grant funding. Review of applications will begin immediately.
