Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for an Engineer II / Research Engineer to join the Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering Department. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.

The Autonomous Vehicles Group in the Deep Submergence Lab at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is a world leader in autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) technology. Not only do we design and build some of the most unique and advanced vehicles in the world, but we take everything we build into the field and test it in the crucible of the ocean. Successful candidates will have a mix of design, build, and field work with worldwide travel potential, significant challenge, and generous annual and cruise leave policies offering a true work-hard/play-hard opportunity. We are looking for not only a jack of all trades, but also a master of some who can make unique contributions within the group.
Candidates will work on a combination of DoD technology development project, scientific development projects and other more established vehicles such as the Nereid Under Ice Vehicle, or the vehicles of the National Deep Submergence Facility (NDSF). NDSF vehicles typically spend 100 - 200 days per year at sea gathering data and samples for ocean scientists and testing new technology. Members of this team all spend time both in the office/lab and in the field. Field operations range from test missions to science, exploration, or disaster response. Previous missions have included oil spill response, locating black boxes, studying sub-sea volcanoes, and looking for mantle rocks to name just a few. In between deployments, you will be working in the Deep Submergence Lab at Woods Hole developing new autonomous underwater vehicles, new diver equipment, and other undersea instruments and technologies. Past project sponsors include NSF, NOAA, Office of Naval Research, DARPA, NASA, NTSB, foreign governments, philanthropic organizations, and corporations.
Engineers within the group are expected to routinely deploy with the systems that they work on. This entails both testing deployments where new technology is refined and validated, but also operational deployments where the systems developed are utilized in direct support of a science mission or other national need. These deployments are worldwide, often offshore and typically range between 7 and 60 days. Candidates are expected to deploy for up to 120 days per year especially early in their tenure at WHOI. Candidates must be comfortable balancing multiple projects and priorities with limited supervision.
Specific tasks include but are certainly not limited to:
Design and/or redesign both major and minor sections of underwater vehicles including both shallow and deep projects. This includes mechanical design as well as structural engineering. Systems may include pressure housings, mechanisms, frames, chassis, lift points, and actuators.
Keep track of system level tradeoffs including buoyancy budgets, weight budgets, and depending on the candidate perhaps fiscal budgets and schedules for specific subsystems.
While at sea, coordinate and carry out rigging, maintenance, and mechanical operations of various vehicle systems.
Work in close collaboration with software and electrical engineers to develop highly integrated and novel systems.
Cross train in the hands on aspects of many different roles in order to maximize flexibility on deployments.

A significant commitment to success of the program and the mission will be required particularly while at sea. This is a group that is known for going to extreme measures to make a cruise succeed even in the face of significant setbacks and any long term team member will need to have the same attitude. Candidates must be highly creative when it's time to be creative but must be able to become highly focused and effective as deadlines approach. The ship will sail whether the vehicle is ready or not.

DESIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
Education Desired: Minimum of a BS in mechanical engineering plus 3 years of experience or a technician with more than 15 years of experience including significant design work. Candidates at the Engineer II rank will require either a MS in an engineering discipline or a BS degree and several years of relevant work experience. Candidates at the Research Engineer level must have either a PhD or a lesser degree and substantial relevant work experience
Previous Experience Desired:
Prior mechanical design experience for ocean related hardware is a must. Undersea hardware design experience is strongly desired. Experience with deep systems is preferred, but shallow only is acceptable.
Significant experience in 3D cad tools is required. Experience with Autodesk Inventor or Solidworks is preferred but not required. Experience with finite element analysis is desired.
Previous experience designing pressure housings is desired.
A working knowledge of naval architecture principles is desired.
Prior experience with electric actuators is desired. Hydraulic experience is useful but less so than electric.
Prior at sea experience including rigging and deployment experience is desired.
Crossover skills in electrical engineering and/or software engineering are highly valued
Diving experience is desired but not required. Although not expected, experience with deep, mixed gas, or closed circuit diving is a strong plus.
Prior DoD service is a strong positive provided that it is backed up by a strong technical capability.
Security Clearance Required
Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain a DOD SECRET clearance. Exceptional Candidates who are permanent residents but not citizens MAY be considered depending on the applicant pool.
Sea Duty Required
Position Drives WHOI Vehicles
Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift less than 25-50 lbs independently, 2-3 times per day; carry 25-50 lbs, 3-4 times per day. Visual abilities to include near, far, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions, communicate effectively in loud areas (pier/dock, warehouse). Other physical tasks include occasional prolonged standing/walking; use of hands for basic /fine grasping and manipulation, reaching above and below the shoulders, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, and stooping. Other occupational requirements include excessive cold or heat and humidity, greases and oils, hazardous substances or specimens, electrical/mechanical/ power equipment hazards. Extended periods at sea and prolonged working hours. Physical duties are subject to change.
SEA DUTY CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTIONS:
May work at least 8 hours per day and, at times in excess of 12 hours per day, 7 days per week. Sleep and work hours can deviate from those on land. May be expected to work on watch schedule (such as 8 hours on and 8 hours off or 12 hours on and 8 hours off) for all or part of a cruise or to work as hours are needed to accomplish the planned work. May need to travel during holidays and for long distances to and from foreign ports. May experience rudimentary living and working conditions, with shared and basic living quarters and laboratories. May experience bad or extreme weather conditions, including heavy seas, winter weather or hot, tropical weather. Work on deck may occur in both hot and cold conditions around the clock. Sea conditions will lead to active ship motion. Should be able to climb steep and vertical ladders and able to enter and exit compartments through hatches, doors, and sills. Should be able to carry heavy gear and participate in the loading and unloading of the ship as well as in the activities on deck and in the labs during the cruise. Shipboard environment may include: confined areas, shared sleeping quarters (berths) and bathroom facilities, small and basic berthing, fixed meal times and basic menus. Modest levels of heating, cooling, ventilation, and illumination, limited or no email and internet access and limited off-duty and recreational facilities (library, lounge, movies). May be exposed to potential allergens and irritants, including paint fumes. May experience constant and intermittent loud noises, and slippery and uneven surfaces.
