Skidmore College, a small liberal arts college situated in the foothills of the Adirondacks in upstate New York, seeks a creative, user-oriented Metadata Librarian to provide strategic and innovative leadership for metadata services. The Metadata Librarian will play a critical role in supporting discovery, access, management, and preservation of Scribner Library’s physical, digital, and electronic resources. This person will partner with colleagues in other service areas within the library – Acquisitions, Resource Management, Systems, Public Services, Digital and Special Collections – and will serve as a forward-thinking leader on matters of resource description and metadata creation/management. The successful candidate will have a comprehensive understanding of how metadata creation supports research assistance and instruction, and will be responsive to the information needs of the entire academic community.
Based in Lucy Scribner Library's Bibliographic Services Department and reporting to the College Librarian, the Metadata Librarian holds an 11-month contract and, as a non-tenured faculty member, participates in shared governance at the College. Scribner Library is looking for someone attuned to new technologies and able to participate in the administration of a comprehensive technology plan that guides the library's adoption of next generation library systems. Projects on the horizon include transitioning to a new library services platform, making our digital collections more accessible, improving our library website, and improving or replacing our discovery services. The Metadata Librarian will demonstrate a willingness to train and mentor cataloging staff through changes in library technology, and advocate effectively for the needs of the team. This person will serve as a member of Scribner Library's project teams that require metadata expertise, and will apply that expertise to the Library's collections and their future development.
Key responsibilities Oversee daily operations of the cataloging unit of Bibliographic Services; develop policies, goals, and procedures; supervise library staff (2FTE). Responsible for oversight of all aspects of record quality and catalog integrity. Work within the Resource Management team to acquire, make accessible, and maintain integrity of the library's electronic resources. Work with Systems Librarian to identify and create record format specifications and develop procedures for importing/exporting, batch data processing, publishing, and integrating records from multiple sources and vendors. Provide cataloging support and metadata creation for Special Collections and the Library's growing digital collections. Create original records for materials in all formats.
Additional responsibilities: Participate in the development of metadata policies including descriptive, administrative, and technical metadata schemas for digital collections appropriate for the library’s current and future systems. Participate in the development and management of the library’s discovery service Lead and participate in collection management projects, such as the inventory and ongoing weeding of the collection; work closely with other librarians and departments in developing project plans, generating reports, and batch data processing. Compile and analyze annual cataloging statistics for reporting to internal and external agencies. Develop training materials and documentation for library staff in the application of metadata standards and cataloging policy and procedures. Participate in reference and instruction/departmental liaison activities in line with the successful candidate's strengths, interests, and institutional needs. Demonstrate professional engagement and scholarship required for advancement through library faculty ranks.
ALA-accredited master's degree in library/information science or international equivalent. At least three years' experience working with metadata in an academic library. Knowledge of and experience applying cataloging standards such as AACR2/RDA, MARC, LCC, LCSH. Extensive experience with OCLC Connexion, MarcEdit, and an integrated library system. Excellent analytical and organizational skills, with demonstrated ability to adapt and be resourceful in response to complex problems. Strong service commitment. Supervisory experience. Evidence of proactive and collaborative leadership. Ability to work as part of a team as well as independently and flexibly in a dynamic environment. Highly effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Interest in and awareness of metadata issues and trends, such as linked data and BIBFRAME. Demonstrated experience with XML-based standards such as Dublin Core, EAD, VRA Core, etc. Experience cataloging materials for special collections. Working knowledge of XML and related technologies. Experience developing metadata crosswalks. Experience planning and implementing metadata schema for digital collections. Experience in name/subject authority work. Familiarity with Voyager, EBSCO Discovery, WorldShare Management Services, WorldCat. Experience migrating to a new integrated library system or library services platform.
