Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T) invites nominations and applications for an innovative academic higher education professional to serve as the Director of Institutional Research and Data Management. Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, the Director is expected to build the campus capacity to identify and use data to respond to external demands and inform strategic campus priorities.
This leader plans and directs institutional research and reporting to support the strategic goals of Missouri S&T. This person is a vital collaborator to the Provost and other senior leaders, supporting the effective use and reporting of data so that the campus can measure and respond in a timely manner to key strategic priorities. This person will lead a growing unit that, among other activities, fulfills a wide range of institutional data requirements, including accreditation support, measurement of student success initiatives, strategic enrollment planning, and submission of rankings-related data to external agencies.
In addition to data collection and analysis, the Director will continuously improve self-service tools that enable campus end users to access and use institutional data. The Director must have the capacity to not only collect and report data but to provide thoughtful insight to the campus leadership on how they might analyze data to make informed decisions about future campus directions.
The primary responsibilities of the role are to:
Work closely with the Academic Affairs division and leadership to develop analyses and studies that assist in planning for and monitoring key activities, such as accreditation, academic program planning, student success initiatives, enrollment management, campus rankings, and short- and long-range strategic planning. support the Office of the Provost in enrollment planning and forecasting activities.
Oversee the university's survey research function to assist the campus community in administering internal and external surveys, working closely with groups such as the Faculty Senate and the Institutional Review Board (IRB) to ensure adherence to all regulations, policies and procedures.
Master's Degree in field of computational data analytics or related field (e.g., computer science; management and information science; statistically-based sociology program) 8 years of overall experience with demonstration of increasing responsibility and supervision of other staff over time
Earned Doctorate Degree in field of computational data analytics or related field (e.g., computer science; management and information science; statistically-based sociology program) 10 years of overall experience, with some portion in a higher education environment, with demonstration of increasing responsibility and supervision over time
The successful individual will possess advanced analytical, computational, and statistical skills, Sen highly developed data visualization and presentation skills with the ability to articulate concepts clearly, both orally and in writing, and to listen accurately to synthesize complex requests and needs of broad stakeholders. Additional priority in consideration will be given to candidates who possess some the following:
Advanced data query skills and thorough knowledge of PeopleSoft, Query, and SQL
Ability to develop critical questions related to institutional data to support analysis of campus priorities
Ability to assess and improve data quality
Ability to use data analytics to provide optimal solutions to identified campus problems and/or opportunities
Ability to apply predictive analytics to various student success measures
Ability to make inferences about data
Ability to assess team and individual performance, provide constructive feedback, and make continuous improvements
Ability to interpret policy, anticipate issues and take corrective action
Ability to interact with diverse groups of people in a respectful and courteous manner
Knowledge of survey and research methods
Knowledge of multiple software packages, Including spreadsheets, word processing and statistical tools (e.g., SPSS, SAS, NVivo) or other qualitative data software analysis packages
Knowledge of a rapidly changing educational technologies environment and third-party products that offer the ability to use campus data to develop predictive analytic models of student success intervention programs
Knowledge of higher education data definitions and student classifications
Knowledge of relational database concepts, including data warehousing concepts and techniques

History of Missouri S&T
Founded nearly 150 years ago as the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy, the school took advantage of the land-grant opportunities offered by the federal government through the Morrill Act. In 1963, following the establishment of the UM System, the school became known as the University of Missouri-Rolla. In 2008, the university changed its name to Missouri University of Science and Technology to broadcast more clearly its position as a leading STEM-focused university dedicated to discovery, creativity, and innovation to benefit the citizens of Missouri, the nation, and the world. As one of the original land-grant universities in the state, Missouri S&T is poised to capitalize in the coming years on the growing importance of STEM education throughout the state and the nation.
Today, Missouri S&T finds itself at a critical point in its evolution and is seeking dedicated data professionals to help inaugurate a new era of research growth and student success through a new strategic plan and in partnership with the university's talented faculty, staff, students, alumni, advisors and partners.
