About Florida Department of Health
Through Florida’s Newborn Screening Program (NBS), conditions that can impact a child’s long-term health or survival are identified with a simple test. Early detection, and intervention can prevent death or disability and allow children to reach their full potential. Millions of babies in the U.S. are routinely screened each year, using a few drops of blood taken from the newborn’s heel and collected on a special filter paper.
Florida screens for 54 disorders - 32 disorders recommended by the United States Department of Health and Human Services Recommended Uniform Screening Panel (RUSP) and an additional 22 secondary disorders, unless a parent objects in writing.
The hospital sends the blood sample to the Bureau of Public Health Laboratories (BPHL) in Jacksonville which screens over 1,000 blood samples per day. All results are sent back to the hospital and then forwarded to the baby's doctor. Doctors can also get results for their patients from the Florida Newborn Screening Results (FNSR) website.
