Virginia Beach’s diverse economy is heavily influenced by the U.S. military. The region is home to the largest active duty military population in the U.S.; as well as 9 major military installations representing all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. Private industry support for the area’s defense operations plays a major role in the local economy, creating thousands of jobs and leading to significant innovations in new technologies.
Virginia Beach’s Central Business District features Town Center, a 25-acre development spanning 17 city blocks and including more than 800,000 square feet of Class A office space and 700,000 square feet of upscale retail, dining and hotels.

Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in public policy, planning, business administration or related field. Candidates will ideally have a master’s degree in public administration, business administration or related field along with ten years increasingly responsible executive level experience preferably in leading large, complex local government operations. Candidates must be highly collaborative, problem solving leaders with a communicative, team-oriented management style. Starting salary is $250,000 - $270,000 +/- DOQ. Residency in the City of Virginia Beach is required.
