Reporting to the Senior Vice President/Academic Affairs (CAO), this position is responsible for the overall direction of the Somerset Community College (SCC) Learning Commons academic support unit. The unit includes six physical sites located at Somerset and London (campuses) and McCreary, Russell, Casey, and Clinton counties (centers). The Learning Commons serves students, employees, and the public by providing quality library resources and services, tutoring services, and computer assistance. This position provides leadership to the college and community through participation in a shared governance model and promotes an overall environment for academic achievement.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Direct the organization and management of library and information services and Learning Commons personnel in a way that upholds the College's and the Learning Commons' vision, values, and mission in carrying out the work of the unit.
Develop, implement, and evaluate an annual unit plan which provides quality information and information services, facilities, and technological resources to meet or exceed the strategic goals of the college.
Directly or indirectly supervise all Learning Commons personnel.
Collaborate with instructional faculty to meet diverse curriculum needs and serve as a liaison between the Learning Commons and the academic community.
Supervise and collaborate with Tutor Coordinator to provide high quality academic support.
Supervise and assess Learning Commons resources.
Develop, implement, and assess unit policies and procedures as needed.
Oversee multiple unit budgets.
Develop and implement a unit marketing plan to include promoting use of current and future technologies for information access.
Assess information needs related to academics.
Ensure compliance with accreditation standards.
Promote professional development of unit faculty and staff; includes ensuring completion of annual mandatory training by established due dates.
Work with other KCTCS library directors and KCTCS Office of Technology Solutions to enhance library and information services system wide; participate in professional organizations and professional development opportunities; and serve on college and KCTCS committees.
Other duties as assigned.
Only applicants holding a Master's degree in Library Science or equivalent from an American Library Association-approved program (ALA) who are able to show evidence of five years of progressively responsible academic library experience (two of which include supervisory experience) will be considered.
We are looking for a director who can demonstrate an understanding of the evolving role of the learning commons model in a community college setting. The successful applicant will be familiar with current technologies and willing to innovate and integrate emerging technologies. Ideally, the director will already have learning commons experience in a community college setting. Excellent oral and written communication skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office are expected. Experience with Alma/Primo library information management system and Blackboard Learning Management system is a plus.
