Scholars at Risk (SAR) seeks a Deputy Director (DD) to have overall responsibility for SAR's day-to-day programming, internal operations and administration. Reporting to the Executive Director (ED), the DD supports the Executive Director and the SAR Board, promoting the organization's vision and championing its mission to protect scholars and promote academic freedom worldwide. Fostering a culture of efficiency, teamwork, transparency and collaboration, the DD directly supervises SAR's protection, advocacy, research, and membership teams and has primary responsibility for day-to-day operations, including communications, finance and audit, information systems, human resources, and facilities. Among the immediate priorities is enriching services for current network member institutions, while increasing support and opportunities for scholars and other at-risk individuals.
The Deputy Director supports the Executive Director's focus on increasing SAR's engagement with governments, higher education leaders, human rights mechanisms, the media, and donors by ensuring the smooth management of SAR existing network and services. Toward that end, the ideal candidate encourages innovation and fosters collaboration and teamwork while clearly communicating shared operational priorities and metrics, directing and aligning systems, processes and objectives without stifling individual and team initiative and creativity. This role is based in New York City and may involve occasional domestic or international travel.
70%: Primary responsibility for SAR's research, advocacy & direct-assistance activities
Directly supervise all aspects of SAR's research, advocacy, protection, and membership teams, including regular meetings with and among team directors; jointly establishing SAR-wide and team goals; and tracking progress according to established metrics.
Play a primary role in developing, researching, and editing SAR reports, papers, advocacy campaigns, academic freedom/values course materials, articles, op-eds and other materials.
Oversee SAR's communications and media outreach activities in furtherance of SAR's mission and strategic plan.
Represent SAR as appropriate with stakeholders, partners, and funders.
Support the Executive Director and Chair of the Board Development Committee in fundraising to sustain SAR's research, advocacy and direct-assistance activities.
Exercise primary responsibility for SAR's financial systems, including budgeting, expenses and revenue tracking across grant and gift accounts; supervising internal and external accounting and audit staff; communication with NYU finance officers; and reporting to the Executive Director and Chair of the Board Finance and Audit Committee.
Exercise primary responsibility for SAR's internal operations, including information systems, human resources, and facilities; maintain relations with relevant NYU officers.

Work closely with the Executive Director and Board to translate their vision into a clearly articulated operational strategy aligned with SAR's mission and strategic plan.
Focus on outcomes and continuous improvement. Ensure that the management, staffing, and culture of the SAR's internal operations are aligned with SAR's mission and strategic plan.
With the Executive Director and Chair of the Board, ensure that SAR has effective strategic planning and implementation processes, including transition planning for key roles.
Required Education: Graduate degree in a relevant field or extensive comparable experience.
Required Experience: 7+ years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Experience: Previous experience in the fields of higher education, international higher education, program management, human rights, immigration/refugee services, or related fields.

Scholars at Risk (SAR) is an international network of over 500 higher education institutions in over 35 countries. SAR's mission is to promote academic freedom and defend the human rights of scholars and their communities worldwide. SAR meets this mission through three primary activity areas: (1) protection services for threatened scholars and other at-risk individuals; (2) advocacy and related research, reporting and campaigning for scholars or other victims of attacks on higher education; and (3) research and training on academic freedom and its constituent elements. In furtherance of all of these activities, SAR organizes multiple events, trainings, courses and publications, including a biennial SAR Global Congress—an international gathering for SAR's global movement and prospective new partners to share experience, discuss critical issues, and shape SAR's research and advocacy strategies for the coming years. SAR's staff is organized into teams for each of these programming areas, along with a membership team to research and develop services and activities for network member institutions, faculty and students, and related development and administration roles. The Deputy Director plays a critical in conceptualizing, researching, implementing and supervising all of these activities including, under the direction of the Executive Director and Board, supervising the majority of SAR's 18+FTE staff and managing SAR's budget ($1.9M in FY18).

SAR is a dynamic organization which has experienced rapid growth in demand for its programming and services; numbers of participating institutions, faculty and students; staff and budget. The Deputy Director coordinates all SAR internal and external activities, including with SAR network members, partners and clients. The Deputy Director also identifies, selects and supervises external vendors and consultants, as needed, and manages relationships with all NYU offices (e.g. AP, ITS, HR).
Supervision: The Deputy Director supervises the majority of SAR staff, excluding the Executive Director, Europe Director, and Development Officer, and reports to the Executive Director.
