Adler University is currently seeking an entrepreneurial executive to join its leadership team. Reporting to the President, Raymond E. Crossman, and participating as a member of the Adler University Cabinet, the Vice President for Institutional Advancement (VP) serves as the University’s Chief Development Officer and will work closely with the President, Chief of Staff, and Board of Trustees to build a robust and diversified fundraising strategy to fuel Adler’s continued growth. Primarily driven by tuition, Adler is looking to diversify revenue streams with a particular focus on fundraising for scholarships and the University’s institutes and centers.
The VP provides a strategic fundraising vision and subsequently leads and manages all philanthropic functions – both front line and operational. In this capacity, the Vice President has responsibility for the development, administration and monitoring of major and leadership gifts, planned giving, annual fund, and alumni relations programs. Experience with comprehensive campaigns is key to this role as Adler University will be wrapping its first comprehensive campaign in 2020, having raised a total of $10 million dollars over six years, and preparing to launch a subsequent campaign in 2021.
The Office of Institutional Advancement currently includes four people, an Associate Vice President (AVP), a Director of Institutional Giving, and Manager of Advancement Services in Chicago, and a Director of Donor Engagement for the Vancouver Campus. The Vice President will have the opportunity to envision and hire a growing department and; work closely with the President and Chief of Staff to determine annual fundraising goals and develop an integrated short- and long-term fundraising strategy. This includes the identification and expansion of fundraising opportunities such as an annual fund, alumni relations, major gifts, and foundation and corporate support. Entrepreneurial mindsets and fundraising experience across different organization types is a plus. Diverse candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
Increase philanthropic support by developing, implementing, leading and monitoring a comprehensive fundraising program which incorporates, but is not limited to, major, leadership and planned giving as part of a multi-year comprehensive campaign, annual fund giving and alumni relations, and corporate and foundation giving.
Work closely with the President and Chief of Staff to structure and hire an advancement team tailored to meet the unique fundraising goals of the University. Motivate, develop and retain said team of fundraising professionals to deliver efficiently and effectively.
Engage and motivate Adler Leadership (President, Board, executives and others) to engage in the moves management (identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship) of select prospects and
Build a culture of philanthropy at Adler University.
Serve as a passionate and visible spokesperson for Adler University, and as a prominent face of fundraising throughout the organization and in the community.
Track industry trends, strategy and best practices, including educating others and evaluating opportunities for continuous improvement.
Fund Development Management
Oversee the building and continual refreshment of active prospect portfolios for all frontline fundraisers, as well as select executives and trustees.
Partner in leading the University’s volunteer leadership structure and lead in identifying a cadre of potential volunteers to expand our scope and reach within the philanthropic community.
Manage a personal portfolio of top-tier leadership, corporate and/or foundation donors and
Work closely with the President in the strategic moves management of his portfolio of donors and prospects.
Ensure strong and consistent stewardship of current donor pool.
Build out a robust fundraising operations program including gift processing, database management, prospect research, event planning, analytics and forecasting to support the work of the front-line fundraising team.
With a strong grounding in data, oversee consistent reports of fundraising progress, communicating the goals and strategies of the overall advancement efforts and managing the progress against interim
In partnership with Finance, ensure ethical and appropriate financial administration of contributed income, including overseeing the donor and prospect records, gift processing and donor stewardship
Working closely with marketing, build out a consistent and effective donor communications strategy to effectively share our mission, goals and opportunities for engagement.
Board Development and Management
Establish and maintain a strong relationship with the Board of Trustees and all related boards, councils, advisory groups, Campaign Committee,
Partner with Adler University’s Board and senior leadership team to maximize their engagement and efficacy in fundraising activities.
Strategize and actively participate in the Board development and nominations process, ensuring the Board is attuned to and focused on its primary Ambassadorial, Philanthropic and Governance roles.

THE QUALIFIED CANDIDATE
Adler University seeks an entrepreneurial and strategic professional with a proven track record of growing revenue, and progressive experience managing a team of fundraising professionals. This position will be a great opportunity for a veteran or emerging fundraising leader excited to think creatively and grow a program borrowing from both operating non-profit and higher education fundraising best practices. She/he should thrive in a fast-paced, high-accountability and results-driven culture. She/he will have strong knowledge of fundraising best practices and processes, a creative and enthusiastic viewpoint, and be passionate and committed to Adler University’s mission. This person will take initiative, as well as be adaptable, highly organized, persuasive and detail-oriented, with the ability to build collaborative relationships and foster trust both internally and externally. This person will be as comfortable with fundraising strategy as they are with back-office fundraising operations, utilizing data to drive strategy and hold their team accountable. The successful candidate will exhibit personal integrity, honesty, zeal and compassion.
Specific Position Requirements Include:
Demonstrated Major Gifts and/or Campaign experience with solid track record of meeting or exceeding goals.
Ability to develop and maintain a strong presence in the philanthropic community, particularly in Chicago. Must have the interpersonal skills to effectively engage philanthropic and community leaders, as well as current and prospective
A career history that shows progressively increasing responsibility in development or related fields. Minimum of seven (7) years experience, with three (3) in managing staff.
Familiarity with the moves management process.
Demonstrated ability to recruit and train volunteers to support fundraising
Ability to gather, analyze and effectively communicate data.
Comfort fundraising across different cultural contexts, in the US and Canada.
Work and civic engagement experiences which demonstrate a commitment to social justice, as well as to the values of the University – social interest, pluralism, courage, excellence, pragmatism.
Evidenced prior work in creative and strategic planning and implementation of fund development
Excellent planning, organizing, and problem solving
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse community, and contribute to the learning environment of the University.
