You will serve as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist in the Laboratory/Clinical Pathology Department of Navy Medical Center Portsmouth Virginia.

You will have the ability to recognize adverse donor reactions including psychological and neurophysiological donor reactions and be able to call for emergency assistance in the absence of medical provider.
You will ensure a successful whole blood donation for each potential donor.
You will assist in monitoring accepted standards of practice within the Donor Center, Blood Bank, Laboratory and Command Quality Assurance (QA) requirements.
You will analyze mathematics and statistics as related to laboratory medicine practices including QA and systems and process
You will understand Laboratory Safety Programs and demonstrate continual compliance with the program.
You will have the ability to recognize quality control parameters for quality control (QC) data and laboratory test results to determine quality of blood products and suitability for transfusion.

You must be certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT) or other board of registry deemed comparable by the Center for Clinical Laboratory Medicine (CCLM) as a medical technologist (MT) or medical laboratory scientist (MLS); or be a commissioned laboratory officer in the Military Services, and have earned a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution; and have at least 3 years of laboratory experience in high complexity testing and be certified by the ASCP, AMT or other board of registry deemed comparable by CCLM as an MT or MLS; AND
Meet minimal conditions to be certified under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Program in accordance with 42 CFR 493.1461.
Must possess a Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Certification. Failure to possess this certification will result in an ineligible rating. Possession of the factor must be verifiable via your resume or support documents.

A Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from a regionally accredited college/university including courses in biological science, chemistry, and mathematics; AND have successfully completed a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time my degree was obtained. OR
Successfully completed a full 4-year course of study that included 12 months in a college or hospital-based medical technology program or medical technology school approved by a recognized accrediting organization. The professional medical technology curriculum may have consisted of a 1-year post- bachelor's certificate program or the last 1 or 2 years of a 4-year program of study culminating in a bachelor's in medical technology. OR
Have successfully completed a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree from an accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of biological science (with one semester in microbiology), 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) of chemistry (with one semester in organic or biochemistry), one semester (one quarter) of mathematics. (Note - All science and mathematics courses must have been acceptable for credit toward meeting the requirements for a science major at an accredited college or university.) AND have five years of full time acceptable clinical laboratory experience in Blood Banking, Chemistry, Hematology, microbiology, Immunology and Urinalysis/Body Fluids. (Note - Acceptable experience is responsible professional or technician experience in a hospital laboratory, health agency, industrial medical laboratory, or pharmaceutical house; or teaching, test development, or medical research program experience that provided an understanding of the methods and techniques applied in performing professional clinical laboratory work. Certification/licensure as a medical technologist (generalist) obtained through written examination by a nationally recognized credentialing agency or State licensing body is a good indication that the quality of experience is acceptable.) OR
Are currently a federal employee assigned to a Medical Technologist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist 0644 series position as of September 2017.
