Mississippi State University (MSU) is seeking a Senior Research Scientist based at the Advanced Composites Institute in Starkville, MS. The Institute conducts industry and government sponsored collaborative research in the field of advanced composite structures leveraging resin infusion and stitched dry fiber preform technology in addition to traditional composite methodologies. It serves as the focal point of inter-departmental research and education by providing exposure to industry focused advanced research in a cooperative environment working directly with technology leading experts. Mission objectives for the Institute include the development of advanced design-build concepts for composite structures with improved performance beyond conventional approaches that enable low cost, high rate manufacturing. The institute serves as an expert resource for technology development in the aerospace, automotive, marine, ballistics, and energy sectors.
The Advanced Composites Institute, or ACI, focuses on pioneering transformational composite technologies in a variety of critical sectors, including aerospace, civil, military, energy, automotive and other emerging markets. It was created at MSU with the donation of a revolutionary stitched composite process and equipment originally developed at NASA by pioneering scientist Marvin B. Dow.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Individual conceives, plans and conducts research in problem areas of considerable scope and complexity. Problems must be thoroughly approached through a series of complete and conceptually related studies, are difficult to define, require unconventional or novel approaches, and require sophisticated research techniques. In a supervisory capacity, plans, develops, coordinates, and directs a number of large and significant projects or a project of major scope. Supervisory responsibilities usually encompasses subordinate supervisors or team leaders (3-5). As a staff specialist, serves as the technical lead for the unit in the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes for an assigned area of responsibility (i.e., subject matter, function, type of facility or equipment, or product). Stays abreast of new technical methods and developments affecting the unit for the purpose of recommending changes in emphasis of programs or new programs warranted by such developments. Proposes and leads new initiatives; guides programs of national or international significance. Primary resource to MSU and customers in identifying future problems, research trends, and opportunities. Presents papers, leads symposia and chairs committees. Participates on advisory/policy boards, journals and societies. Serves as peer reviewer of major technical programs; networks nationally and internationally. Contributions enhance Department/MSU staff, business volume, and facilities/equipment. Plays a lead role in the development and implementation of new and/or expanded technical capabilities that will impact future research projects. Reputation leads to ability to attract major funding. Typically would direct and/or participate in major proposal preparation and presentation. Applies extensive and advanced principles, theories, and concepts. Contributes to the development of solutions to complex problems that require innovation and ingenuity.
* Ph. D. in chemistry, polymer chemistry, engineering, or related field. * Individuals well beyond the Ph. D. that have demonstrated outstanding sustained, and extraordinary professional accomplishments as well as professional leadership. * This position is limited to US citizens and US Permanent residents. * Must be available to travel locally, regionally, and nationally.
* 10 years related professional and industrial experience. * Demonstrated ability to function efficiently and independently in a fast-paced work environment and adjust workload based upon changing priorities. * Previous supervisory experience

Working Conditions and Physical Effort
* Physical ability to support shop and test lab personnel for short periods of time - move freely across elevated work platforms to coordinate design changes with technicians. * The position may require employee to work with hazardous materials. Employee is required to wear personal protective equipment. * Physical requirements include frequent sitting, talking, hearing, walking, and standing. Occasionally requires reaching, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling handling objects with hands, and lifting up to 55 pounds. * Vision requirements: Ability to see information in print and/or electronically. * Externally exposed to deadlines; set and revised beyond one's control; interruptions influence priorities; difficult to anticipate nature or volume of work with certainty beyond a few days; meeting of deadlines and coordination of unrelated activities are key to position.
