General Overview Innovation is a 125 person business development unit of Mass General Brigham accountable for the worldwide commercial application of the unique capabilities and discoveries of its 74,000 employees and faculty. It is responsible for revenue generation through industry collaborations, investing, international consulting, company creation, licensing, and innovation management. It supports the research requirements of its Harvard Medical School appointed faculty and its hospitals including its four core Harvard affiliates -- Brigham and Women's Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Massachusetts Eye and Ear and McLean Hospital. Within Innovation, Business Development's mission is to create Mass General Brigham-wide strategic relationships with industry in support of the research and clinical enterprises. To fulfill this mission, Business Development has four specific objectives: • Create and manage strategic alliances with Industry; • Provide business development and strategic & business planning support to key initiatives across Mass General Brigham Corporate and Hospital Affiliates; • Develop new revenue / income generating business opportunities; • Develop and implement business processes in support of Business Development's collaborations and licensing activities The Manager has the opportunity to work on major initiatives critical to these business objectives and reports to the Director or Senior Director of Business Development. Principal Duties and Responsibilities The Business Development Manager will be accountable for driving healthcare based strategic initiatives, proactively identifying, understanding, and appropriately framing programs in response to market / industry dynamics, business unit specific and system-wide priorities. As an integral member of the Business Development team within Innovation, this team member will be exposed to a wide variety of clients and unique business problems. This position will help develop strategies for the future that meet internal needs and ultimately optimize hospital operations, financial and clinical performance, and improve patient outcomes for broad populations in the marketplace. The ideal candidate will have prior exposure to healthcare solutions, life sciences, or management consulting and related fields. Overall responsibilities will include: • Management of projects from inception (business planning) through implementation (start-up operations). • Coordination among internal stakeholders / departments (e.g., Legal, IT / IS, Finance) and operating units to ensure strategies address the full continuum of issues. • Synthesizing perspectives and requirements from a diverse clientele (e.g. clinical, regulatory, finance, etc) into a cohesive plan or operating model. • Developing high quality deliverables in support of key strategic initiatives. On a day-to-day basis, the candidate may be asked to: • Produce project deliverables (e.g. road maps, strategy presentations, business plans, market assessments, presentations, etc.) tailored to a specific internal or external audience. • Meet with internal or external subject-matter experts to learn more about the implications of business development opportunity. • Engage partners from across the organization to build out new programs and drive results. • Build an Excel model to project financial impact of new business opportunities and assess commercial viability. Qualifications Qualifications • Bachelors degree in science, engineering, or business required, MBA or advanced degree preferred. • A minimum of 2+ years of experience in management consultancy, corporate strategy, investment banking, or relevant experience in life sciences, healthcare, or related fields. Skills, Abilities and Competencies Functional: Strategy: • Develop strategies with senior team guidance, assess commercialization potential, support sense making and clearly communicated risk vs value trade offs. Modeling & analysis: • Background in financial modeling, ability to prepare pro formas and decision support models is a requirement. Excellent analytical and modeling skills as well as facility with Microsoft Excel is expected. • Develop an analytical approach to a quantitative questions which involves finding/pulling data, manipulating/cleaning data and completing analysis. Domain expertise: • Prior exposure to healthcare solutions, life sciences or management consulting • Experience with project management, strategic planning or business planning Deliverables for strategic & commercial outcomes: • With guidance from senior BD member, clearly defines deliverables for assigned BD projects with relevant performance, cost and timeline. Deals & contracts: • Demonstrates ability to understand deal structure. With support, can craft contract language. Synthesis & communication: • Gathers perspective and requirements from diverse clients (e.g. clinical, regulatory, finance and other expertise needed); integrates into a cohesive plan or operating model. • Extracts key information and is capable of sense-making. • Advanced PowerPoint skills, ability to convene and conduct effective meetings and working sessions. Leadership: Stakeholder engagement: • Demonstrates ability to build rapport with stakeholders, establishes trust and cultivates relationships. • Excellent presentation skills demonstrates ability to convene and conduct effective meetings and working sessions. Management & mentoring: • Manages self effectively, demonstrating curiosity and openness to input, tenacity and resilience when facing complexity and change. • Ability to prioritize competing responsibilities, manage timelines that involve multiple stakeholders, organize and prioritize work independently. • Committed to gain skills needed for advancement in the business development career track.
