TheRole: The Associate Director role with Custom Index Development manages a global team of development analysts and is a key collaborator with clients, product management, IT, and sales to develop methodologies and build the resultant indices in an efficient and manageable way.
The Team: Custom Index Development is a global team with presence in New York, Amsterdam, and Mumbai. The team is responsible for building bespoke indices from custom clients' methodologies. In the role, you will be responsible for managing a global team of development analysts and their workflow, as well as interfacing with clients, vendors, and internal stakeholders. The position reports to the Director and Global Head of Custom Index Development with SPDJI.
The Impact: Each custom index has direct revenue linked to it and thereby contributes to the overall revenue stream generated by SPDJI. The work of the associate director of custom index development holds a senior position within the group and is instrumental in directing workflow, setting deliverable timelines, and coordinating directly with clients.

You will be involved with design and implementation of a new platform to support non-standard SPDJI calculations
Calculating and replicating client custom indices. This includes performing analytical research on companies to determine the composition of the index, adjusting data in our calculation system, and adjusting the data to conform to the rules of the index.
Direct team of 4-5 index developers to quickly and efficiently launch indices and maintain a balanced workflow.
Sit on custom index committees governing the calculation of indices for which S&P acts as benchmark administrator.
Calculating index back history to ensure the index matches a client's expectation.
Creating indices on S&P's proprietary calculation engine.
Work with product management to help clients develop their methodologies to be in line with S&P practices.
Support product management, sales, marketing, and client services - The key revenue source associated with the indices is through licensing the indices for derivative products, particularly ETFs and futures. Attend client meetings where needed to help clients develop their own methodologies and strategies in an efficient and replicable way.
Work with the technology group to further enhance our system capabilities by identifying deficiencies in our workflow and quality control processes.
Participating in confidential client discussion to provide oversight to a wide range of indices.
Must be able to manage multiple projects and deadlines. The projects typically will involve interpreting methodologies from clients of varying sophistication levels, assessing cost and working with product teams to come up with pricing, managing system changes from specification to testing to implementation, and making process improvements for the development team and entire custom operations team.
Must be able to clearly communicate to a variety of both internal and external clients.
Responsibility for establishing training programs for new employees in addition to helping experienced index developers take the next steps in their careers.
Managing and maintaining relationships with key members of other groups within S&P Index Services, across other S&P departments, particularly product management, index management and IT.
Evaluate complex methodologies, evaluate different implementation methods, and direct staff on QA procedures.

Understanding of global financial markets, particularly equity markets
Strength in quantitative analysis, including optimization
Must have experience reading index methodologies and other technical documentation
Bachelor's Degree required, focus in business, math, economics, or finance strongly preferred
Must be able to demonstrate excellent analytical and quantitative capabilities to solve original, non-routine problems in a timely and insightful manner
Superior computer skills in Excel, including VBA
Ability to learn S&P's proprietary index calculation engines
Ability to learn new data and calculation platforms in a limited time
Ability to evaluate data sources and business applications and provide input on data vendors
Requires excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to coordinate work done by multiple people and / or groups. Proficiency in Microsoft Office required.
Experience dealing with customers in a time-sensitive demanding environment where interpretation of data has both objective and subjective components requiring persuasion and influencing skills.
5+ years of professional experience in index production or similar role.
Management of multiple reports, particularly in Mumbai, IN
Management of a team with diverse skillsets including data management, programming, and quantitative analysis
Experience with Factset, Refinitiv Eikon, Refinitiv Datascope Select, and CapIQ.
Advanced Degree in mathematics, economics, finance, business, or CFA membership
Experience analyzing index methodologies and a strong understanding of index mathematics
