The Planning and Community Development Director is a key member of the City Manager’s Executive Leadership Team with responsibility for planning, directing, managing, and supervising the day-to-day operations of the Department. Operating within broad general policy guidelines and in alignment with the City Manager, the Director exercises substantial latitude and discretion to achieve effective and efficient utilization of resources to manage the department. This position is appointed and serves under the discretion of the City Manager and requires frequent interaction with other department directors.
Under the administrative direction of the Deputy City Manager, the Director of Planning and Community Development is responsible for providing leadership, direction, and general administrative oversight to the Planning and Community Development Department and employees responsible for the community's growth management planning process, including citizen involvement, the development and update of the City’s comprehensive plan, compliance, zoning and land use ordinances, environmental protection regulations, development codes and policies. Also responsible for the City’s integrated development review processes and code enforcement as well as housing, neighborhood, and community development activities. Work involves significant community engagement and public involvement with elected officials, citizens, neighborhood groups, and other governmental entities. Collaborates with the City Manager, City Council, and other departments on strategy and policy to ensure that the City’s mission and core values are incorporated into operational activities and services.
Our ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree (Masters preferred) in urban planning, public administration or business administration, or a closely related field, and 6 to 9 years of progressively responsible experience in urban planning, code administration and enforcement, or community development at the local government level including 3-5 years management experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Requires a valid driver's license. American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) Certification preferred.
