Global TIES for Children is a university-based center with researchers across NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU New York. At New York University's Global TIES for Children we design, evaluate and advise on programs and policies to improve the lives of children and youth in the most vulnerable regions across the globe. Led by University Professors J. Lawrence Aber and Hirokazu Yoshikawa, we work with some of the world's leading non-governmental organizations and with governments in low-income (LI) and conflict-affected (CA) countries on developing and evaluating innovative approaches to promoting the health, education, and social development of children and their communities. Together with our key strategic partner organizations, our work leverages cutting-edge scientific methods and interdisciplinary collaboration to:
Generate actionable evidence to promote child and youth development by conducting and evaluating powerful strategies to transform relevant "social settings" (i.e., classrooms, schools, families, communities, etc.) that are key drivers of children's learning and well-being;
Communicate actionable evidence by engaging diverse stakeholders across sectors and regions and disseminating a rigorous evidence base to inform program and policy decisions for children and youth in LI and CA countries; and
Build human, administrative, and institutional capacity for a robust global science and practice through the provision of professional development and training activities.
Global TIES for Children organizes it's work under two different initiatives based on age range and areas of expertise: the Early Childhood Development in Emergencies and Conflict (ECDEC) initiative and the Primary Education and Learning in Emergencies (PELE) initiative. For both age ranges, Global TIES for Children has contributed to the development, validation, and adaptation of various measurements to assess development of children aged 0-12 across multiple domains. We now have the opportunity to expand this measurement work and focus on developing locally-reliable and globally-adaptable measures to assess learning through play for children in multiple contexts across multiple age groups.
This initiative will be led by Drs. Hirokazu Yoshikawa (Principal Investigator), J. Lawrence Aber (Co-Principal Investigator), Carly Tubbs and Alice Wuermli (both co-Investigators)
About ECD in Emergency & Conflict
The global refugee crisis is the defining humanitarian issue of our time, with millions displaced due to conflict and war across the world. In addition, we know from decades of research that all children need nurturing care, a comforting routine, and opportunities to learn through play in the critical first years of life. Yet only about 2 percent of humanitarian assistance goes to education, and only a tiny sliver of that 2 percent to early childhood development services. Together with a number of partners, NYU Global TIES for Children has set out to support the development, and evaluate high-quality early childhood development services for young children. The Early Childhood Development in Emergency and Conflict (ECDEC) side of Global TIES for Children has been developing measures to assess learning through play as part of three projects: Ahlan Simsim, Play to Learn, and Learning through PLAY.
The Play to Learn initiative is a partnership between Sesame Workshop, BRAC, the International Rescue Committee (IRC), and NYU Global TIES for Children to develop, provide, and evaluate high-quality early childhood development services and mass media for young children in Rohingya refugee families in Cox's Bazar. Ahlan Simsim is a partnership between Sesame Workshop, the IRC, and NYU Global TIES for Children to develop, provide, and evaluate high-quality early childhood development services and mass media for young children in Syrian refugee families in the Middle East. Learning through Play is ECDEC's newest project, in partnership with RTI International, to provide new ways to measure learning through play and help researchers understand how play contributes to holistic skills development in children.
Ahlan Simsim is implemented in three countries in the Middle East- Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq- and Play to Learn is implemented in Cox's Bazar district, Bangladesh, and Learning through Play has a multi-regional scope across the Middle East, sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Latin America. Play to Learn and Learning through Play are both funded by the LEGO Foundation and Ahlan Simsim is funded by the inaugural 100&Change award from the MacArthur Foundation.
We are seeking a full-time Project Coordinator to work directly with the Planning & Operations team of the ECDEC program to support the range of operational and administrative needs of the ECDEC projects. The Project Coordinator will also work closely with the central TIES team and liaison between the ECDEC program and larger NYU systems.
The Project Coordinator will report directly to the Project Managing Director, ECDEC and is responsible for assisting with operations tasks across the Ahlan Simsim project, Play to Learn project, and RTI Learning Through Play project. The following responsibilities are central to the role:
Operations & Administration
Supporting project needs, including technology and connectivity needs, report writing, and security and safety issues for project teams
Maintaining, creating, and updating project-specific systems, calendars, and mailboxes, liaising with relevant colleagues and other CCO staff
Anticipating, procuring, and managing project supplies and inventory
Finance & Accounts Payable
Efficiently processing external payments to consultants/vendors and internal reimbursements/advances on project grants
Maintain expense tracking systems and support CCO colleagues to regularly monitor transactions and expenditure, including overseeing monthly reconciliation needs for NYU credit cards and accounts
Purchasing technology, office supplies, research equipment, and relevant licenses, as required by the project activities
Cross-study Coordination and Tracking
Liaising with relevant NYU colleagues to ensure all purchasing and shipping complies with applicable regulations.
Maintaining assets registry, as required
Maintaining authorship agreement database and publication planning systems
Maintaining IRB tracking system for project-related studies
Supporting the planning phase of events by brainstorming event structure, anticipating complications, and researching potential participants
Coordinating logistics for domestic and international trips/meetings/workshops/conferences, including helping to book travel and accommodations, designing and disseminating invitations, tracking RSVPs, communicating with invitees, arranging travel and/or liaising with travel agencies, reserving spaces, arranging catering, preparing event materials, and serving as event support on-site to mitigate any challenges that arise.
Supporting staff with travel reimbursement processes, ensuring compliance with both grant terms and NYU policy requirements.
Writing, designing, and disseminating website updates, newsletters, event marketing materials, and other correspondences as needed.
Synthesizing content of academic publications for communications purposes
Tracking of publications in APA/MLA format
Updating/Maintaining website University's content management system and editing basic HTML code as needed
Updating social media platforms with relevant events, publications, and announcements and monitoring activity of other researchers in the field (i.e. human development, applied psychology, international development, etc.)
Human Resources (in liaison with appropriate CCO colleagues)
Coordinating logistics for renewal of appointments and intern, student worker, and temporary worker appointments
Supporting employee onboarding/off boarding activities, including registration in various NYU systems and preparation for new work space allocation and set-up
Other Administrative Duties as needed
Qualifications and Required Skills
Bachelor's degree in Business/Public Administration, Psychology or a related field of study
2-3 years of relevant on-the-job experience
Impeccable organizational and time management skills and ability to work well independently
Excellent communication skills, written and spoken
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite programs, including Excel and Access
Basic familiarity with HTML
International administrative experience preferred, particularly in remotely coordinating event logistics and purchasing/shipping
High- level of professionalism, integrity and excellent work ethic
Fluency in English required
The position may begin as early as January 2022. The position will be based in New York City at the Institute of Human Development and Social Change, New York University.
