Seward, AK (2,729). The City of Seward is seeking an experienced, principled finance executive to serve as its next Finance Director. As a dynamic community surrounded by natural beauties, the City of Seward strives to be a premier community that is committed to providing a safe, resident and business-friendly environment, with high quality services and a responsive government. Situated at the head of Resurrection Bay on the Kenai Peninsula, Seward has a year-round population of just under 3,000, an extraterritorial population of similar size that is served by Seward’s electric utility, and a seasonal population exceeding 10,000 that is supplemented by the arrival of two to three cruise ships per week during the season.
Seward has evolved into a warm, welcoming, and diverse City with so much to offer. Seward’s local economy is driven largely by the commercial fishing industry, marine trade, vessel servicing, and seasonal tourism. The operations of the City are complex, sophisticated, and broad in scope, including utilities, harbors, and ownership of health care facilities. Seward’s annual budget is approximately $35 million.
This position serves as the City’s Chief Financial Officer and is responsible for the planning and direction of financial operations of the City, including financial planning, budget administration, general accounting and reporting, payroll, purchasing, treasury management, debt administration, and revenue billing and collection.
The Finance Director position is appointed by and reports to the City Manager and is an integral part of the executive leadership team. The Finance Director is responsible for oversight and management of all Finance Department operations and staff which includes 8 additional full-time positions (a Deputy Finance Director, Accounting Supervisor, Accounting Tech II, Accounting Tech AP, Accounting Tech PR and Two Utility Billing positions.
The City of Seward operates under the Council/Manager form of government. The Mayor and six members of the Council are elected at large on a staggered basis for three-year terms. Other City departments include Administration, Community Development, Electric, Fire, Harbor, Library/Museum, Parks and Recreation, Police, and Public Works.
The next Finance Director must have strong communication, analytical and financial management skills, be of high integrity, responsive, and work well within a team environment. Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in Public or Business Administration, Accounting, Financial Management or other applicable field, with at least seven years of accounting and increasingly responsible management experience, of which three years is at management level. Experience in Alaska, Master’s Degree and/or CPA preferred. Any combination of education and experience that provides the equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered.
The starting salary range is $86,961.00 to $121,745.00 DOQ. The City of Seward offers a comprehensive benefit plan which includes contributions to medical, dental, life insurance, Retirement Fund, optional 457 plan, paid vacation and holiday time.
