The Impact You'll Make in this Role
The person hired for the position of Director, Administrative and Regulatory Litigation will be an experienced lawyer in government rule-making processes, administrative law, and federal and state regulatory litigation actions, joining a fast-paced team of nine other lawyers and a team of legal professionals who jointly manage litigation across 3M collaboratively with other Legal Affairs colleagues.
Working closely with other 3M colleagues, strategically manage 3M's engagement with government rule-making, and regulatory and administrative litigation
Supervise internal and/or external counsel, experts, and consultants, as well as carefully manage budgets
Proactively monitor and advise on potential regulatory changes and trends that could affect 3M, along with 3M colleagues in other Legal Affairs
Partner with 3M counsel and Government Affairs colleagues to mitigate risk through internal and external advocacy, including active participation in rule-making and legislative processes
Contribute to the efficiency and effectiveness of the Litigation team and Legal Affairs
Your Skills and Expertise
To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:
Juris Doctor degree (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited law school
Eight (8) combined years of experience with litigation, regulatory, and/or corporate investigations, including strategically managing regulatory risk
Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:
Experience operating at the intersection of litigation, regulatory matters, and public policy
Trial and/or appellate court experience in state and federal courts, in a private, public, government or military environment
Experience preparing for and participating in administrative hearings (e.g., hearings before an administrative law judge)
Experience operating in a cross-functional setting
Highly effective written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to communicate at all levels of the organization, including business leaders, department leaders, and director-level management
Experience engaging with federal and state regulators, including state attorneys general, EPA, and state environmental agencies
Familiarity/experience with administrative law and procedure, including at minimum the Federal Administrative Procedure Act (APA)
Experience analyzing and commenting on proposed federal and state regulations
Experience with the litigation of challenges to the validity and applicability of administrative rules in federal and/or state courts
Honesty and unwavering integrity
Sense of humor, curiosity, courage, and a drive for continuous improvement
Currently admitted to practice law in relevant jurisdictions or eligible to become so within 6 months.
Location : Maplewood, MN or Washington, D.C. There is a possibility this position could be remote.
Travel: May include up to 30% domestic/international when safe to do so
