The Unum Audit Manager (internal title Director - Internal Controls,) is responsible for supervising or managing professional staff of the Internal Controls function and contributing across other functional areas of Enterprise Audit. This position develops and provides strategic direction to an assigned team. Individual has wide latitude of creativity, independent decision making, and judgment to plan, develop, implement, and accomplish both audit and broader enterprise goals.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Supervise and/or manage work of staff, including assessing staffing needs of the team, hiring, development, performance management, and compensation decisions.
Coordinates the effective scheduling of audit resources (internal and external) to ensure work is completed timely and in a cost-effective manner.
Leads assigned staff on accurate completion of audit plan and other requested assurance and manages the day to day activities of the staff and the functional area.
Acts as a mentor/teacher to raise the level of expertise within his/her team or other business partners.
Demonstrates broad ownership and accountability for the outcomes of his/her team as well as for the plans and objectives of the organization.
Proactively researches, identifies, and leads effective solutions to achieve enterprise objectives.
Contributes to the evaluation of risk across company business processes and initiatives, and to the development of the annual risk-based audit plan.
Evaluates and updates existing auditing and administrative processes and procedures to streamline activities to increase productivity.
Reviews and analyzes workpapers and key risks and controls and provides expert consulting support to senior management and staff regarding conformance to policies and procedures, technical inquiries, audit planning, and financial, operational, and compliance controls.
Demonstrates excellent research and analytics skills and expert ability to articulate broad business risk management and governance and control issues impacting business partners; proactively recommends the most appropriate/effective recommendations to decision makers including senior management.
Stays current with industry trends, emerging risks, and internal and external issues.
Utilizes more complex or creative ways of displaying supporting data and implements the most appropriate/effective resolution for issues involving the functional audit area.
Develops strong partnerships with senior business management and external partners across a broad set of Enterprise business functions by providing strong contributions to risk management, governance and controls that deliver business value; participates in ongoing relationship management.
Demonstrates and regularly applies an expert working knowledge of Unum's products, services, technology and business processes (including customer, market and industry knowledge), his/her specific functional area, its issues and the technical skills required to support it.
May perform other duties as assigned.
Relevant four-year degree and professional certification preferred or relevant graduate degree, and significant relevant work experience.
Highly motivated, self-directed, with demonstrated strong results and leadership against a broad set of audit and business objectives.
Strong people management or supervisory experience demonstrating effective coaching, mentoring, team building, and leadership.
Strong critical thinking skills.
Expert project management skills for audit and consultative engagements as well as business projects and initiatives.
Ability to lead and drive change quickly and positively; viewed as a leader in change management for self and team.
Strong communication and negotiation skills (clear, concise oral and written communication), effective with presentations and influencing for all levels of audit and business management; adept at handling group dynamics.
Strong understanding of technical environment as it relates to audit metrics, plan execution, and resourcing, including advanced EXCEL, Word, and PowerPoint skills.
Ability to utilize analytics, data mining, and visualization tools to effectively assess and communicate risk impacts of business processes.
Represents Unum's ethical and professional standards at all times.
Public company experience is strongly preferred.
Prior audit manager experience with internal or external audit teams is preferred.
CPA, insurance industry, and Big 4 experience are preferred.
Expert understanding of SOX control framework for GAAP financial reporting.
Expert understanding of NAIC Model Audit Rule framework over Statutory financials.
