The Department of Financial Management at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time College Accountant. The successful candidate will:
Process various journal entries, including manual, uploads, inter-campus, inter-agency, and payroll account distributions.
Analyze and reconcile accounts for accuracy and compliance with all pertinent procedures and regulations.
Prepare daily and monthly bank and SUNY systems cash reporting.
Prepare external and internal reports, spreadsheets and cash requests.
Monitor, reconcile and prepare adjusting entries for various suspense accounts.
Retrieve and verify data; generate electronic copies of accounting documents from accounting systems.
Reconcile bank accounts, and verify related accounting information, as required.
Ensure payments are posted to appropriate accounts; assist in monthly and annual financial statement preparation.
Identify weaknesses in internal controls and safeguards assets.
Develop accounting metrics and prepare charts and graphs for management review.
Provide technical advise to institutional staff regarding allowable expenditures, issues or problems.
Assist with various state and auxiliary reporting and audits; provide schedules and transaction explanations.
Prepare closing entries and schedules.
Assist with entry in property control system and periodic assistance with inventories.
Conduct annual year-end reporting and accreditation support.
Perform additional financial management responsibilities as assigned and as needed.
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting.
3+ years of accounting or finance experience, preferably in a college and/or government environment.
Must have strong knowledge in the use of Word, Excel and Access software programs.
Must have excellent organizational and communication skills, in addition to strong writing, proof reading, reports and/or spreadsheets skills.
Strong ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively with all levels of the organization.
Proficient with MS Office Suite and a variety of electronic data base systems is necessary.
Knowledge of accounting, finance and budgeting principles, practices and methods, general accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
Monday to Friday; 9:00am to 5:00pm
