ROLE of the POSITION
The university has targeted the achievement of the Carnegie Foundation/Highest Research Activity (R1) classification as a primary goal. The quantity and quality of research projects have escalated to meet this challenge. University researchers must be in compliance with federal and state laws and university policy to comply with the Assurance (license) granted by the federal government. This position exists to enable compliance with human research ethics requirements for the UNL V research community.
This position is responsible for the successful maintenance of the record-keeping, review, and revision component of the IRB function as required by the federal government. Activities include documentation of detailed minutes, detailed record-keeping, and interaction with faculty and student researchers due to IRB review and requested revisions.
KNOWLEDGE
Required
- Expert knowledge of federal human research subject regulations, policies, and procedures. Working knowledge of Food and Drug Administration regulations. Knowledge of research terminology and methodology pertaining to research with human subjects. Expert knowledge of human subject protocol review and revision procedures.
- Must be knowledgeable of policies and procedures applicable to IRB review and revisions. Must possess advanced knowledge of federal and international compliance regulations and guidelines that govern human subject research including Federal Policy 45 CFR 46, 21 CFR 50, 21 CFR 56, Belmont Report, Declaration of Helsinki, and Nuremberg Code. Must have knowledge of the history of ethical violations in human subject research. Must be able to interpret and explain human research compliance laws and university policy to faculty, staff, and student researchers.
- Must be able to perform a preliminary administrative review of complex research protocols and identify problems and issues. Must have experience in determinations of exempt protocols. Must possess working knowledge to coordinate and organize complex technical meetings. Must have the initiative in collecting technical information from a wide variety of sources. Must have the ability to maintain the confidentiality of information and records with tact and discretion.
- Must have the knowledge and capability to advise faculty and student researchers on research record-keeping and techniques for monitoring their research activities to ensure federal regulation compliance.
SKILLS
Required
- Must be able to assist in the development of training and education components for the research community including workshops, conferences, and specialty training in human research compliance.
- Must be willing to assist with the development of materials for attaining and renewing AAHRPP accreditation. Must have a working knowledge of AAHRPP accreditation standards or equivalent accrediting body. Must be able to assist with the development of materials for attaining and renewing AAHRPP IRB accreditation.
- Must have excellent oral and written communication and organization skills. Must have the ability to prioritize tasks and work under pressure with multiple deadlines.
ABILITIES
Required
- Must be able to effectively advise faculty and student researchers on the compilation of research protocol and informed consent documentation.
- Must possess the CIP certification or attain it within one year. Must have exceptional computer skills to maintain intricate protocol databases as well as database manipulation and information capture and use other relevant computer software applications.
Note: This position can work remotely from anywhere in the United States.

QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires a bachelor’s from a regionally accredited college or university and 3 years of IRB administrator experience. Credentials must be obtained prior to the start of employment.
SALARY RANGE
Salary is competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. The position is contingent upon funding.
