Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an opening for a High Voltage Electrician to join the Facilities team. The primary focus of the role is to perform a variety of electrical functions on medium and high voltage systems including; switching operations, inspection of equipment, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, installation and repairs. The High Voltage Electrician is responsible for monitoring and assessing the reliability of the medium and high voltage electrical system. The high voltage electrician may support the low voltage electricians on an "as needed" basis.
What You Will Do:
High Voltage Electrician (>600V-115KV)
Inspect, maintain, test, repair, operate, troubleshoot and replace 4160V, 12.47KV and 115KV equipment.
Perform a variety of electrical functions on medium and high voltage electrical distribution systems; troubleshoots, repairs, installs, maintains and services medium and high voltage electrical distribution systems and associated equipment; operate, inspects and perform preventative maintenance on medium and high voltage overhead and underground distribution systems.
Prepare switch tags and perform system switching operations to isolate and place equipment in a safe condition. Select the correct tools and techniques for handling specified equipment by applying a thorough knowledge of the types and sizes of equipment used.
Support planned and unplanned work during off hours, including holidays and weekends.
Assist in the planning and execution of maintenance shutdowns, and corrective/preventative maintenance plans. Collaborate and partner with internal and external groups to address critical and broad-scoped projects including working with Facilities Engineering, Maintenance, Facilities Area Management, Environmental Health and Safety, Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), UC Berkeley, Utilities Companies, outside contractors and other national laboratories.
Respond to medium and high voltage work requests including serving as tactical subject matter experts, consultants and execution of operations.
Keep accurate work records and complete paperwork in a neat and timely manner. Maintain operating and quality assurance records, such as daily log books.
Maintain up to date knowledge of LBNL facilities layout, key personnel, applicable policies and procedures, design requirements and Safety policies.
Layout, construct, maintain, operate, test, and repair a network of underground electric utility distribution system main power substations, interconnected circuits, and stand-by power systems >600 Volts.
Plan the methods and procedures required to complete installation, maintenance, operations, testing, and repair work on electric utility distribution system substations, circuits, and stand-by power systems. With WPC, management, and other related staff, develop planning, timing and contingencies for work to be performed
Perform electric utility distribution system switching operations to transfer system loads, isolate components, de-energize equipment, and install safety grounds.
Perform installation, maintenance, testing, and repair on electric utility distribution system load-sectionalizing switches, transformers, power circuit breakers, duct banks, wood poles, power cables, manholes, metal-clad switchgear, capacitor banks, protective relays, battery systems, metering, communication lines, and automatic transfer schemes.
Perform installation, maintenance, testing, and repair on permanently installed and portable stand-by power systems >600 Volts.
Perform underground cable pulling, splicing, and termination.
Perform overhead conductor, air switch, surge arrester, and fused-cutout installation.
Maintenance of medium and high voltage equipment includes switches, circuit breakers, transformers, relays, transmission lines, cables and cable terminations.
Assist with SCADA installations and provide tactical advice and guidance.
Install, connect, test, operate, modify, repair and replace auxiliary support equipment in Substations, Switch Stations and associated buildings.
Low Voltage Electrician (<600V)
Meet most requirements and qualifications of an LBNL electrician
Perform troubleshooting and repair of electrical systems and equipment. Serve as a tactical subject matter expert on practical work matters related to electrical work.
Install, connect, test, operate, modify, repair and replace circuit breakers, controls, fuses, lighting fixtures, motors, outlets, signaling devices, switches, thermostats, timers and other wiring devices. Test, operate, calibrate, adjust, clean, service and repair electrical components and systems. Update prints and equipment history/service records.
Fabricate component parts, assemblies and chassis. Fabricate, place and terminate various types of busses, cables, conductors and wires. Shape, join, place and anchor various types of cableways, raceways, enclosures and wire ways.
Interpret prints, wiring schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts and written descriptions of functions and project requirements.
Use knowledge of the National Electric Code and LBL specifications for compliant installations and NFPA 70E for safe work practices.
Comply with all applicable Federal, State, local codes and policies. Immediately stop work in the event of danger to people or property and notify the MRO management team.
What is Required:
Meet most qualifications of a LBNL electrician.
Completion of a formal apprenticeship program in industrial electrical maintenance or equivalent accredited military, vocational, commercial, trade training program in the electrical field. Journey-level industrial maintenance experience with HV/MV systems. Additional experience may include but is not limited to any of the following: maintenance, testing, cable splicing, troubleshooting and repair of HV/MV switchgear and protective devices in an industrial or utility environment.
Working knowledge of applicable ANSI, IEEE, IEC, NETA-MTS, UL and other standards for electrical/mechanical equipment.
Physical requirements including the ability to climb stairs, ladders, scaffolding and to work at heights. Ability to use various types of man lifts. Ability to work in confined spaces, around rotating equipment, under florescent lighting. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl; manual dexterity in both hands; ability to lift weights up to 50lbs.
Must be available to respond to emergencies during off hours including weekends and holidays.
Must be able to perform work in a safe and efficient manner with minimal supervision.
Possession of excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal and listening skills for working in a diverse team environment, and the ability to clearly communicate over telephone and two way radio.
Ability to interact effectively with users and staff, and to address their needs in an effective and timely manner.
Completion of high voltage electrical qualification, to include Qualified Electrical Worker (QEW) 3 training, or ability to complete within 24 months.
Proven record of effective customer service skills.
Possession of a valid California license.
NETA MV Testing Technician ET Level III or equivalent.
MV Underground Distribution experience.
Experience with research equipment.
Previous work experience with energy management control systems, including variable frequency drives.
Possession of hard splicing and preformed splice kits certification issued by a licensed school or approved training program.
5 years demonstrated medium and high voltage (>600V-115KV) experience with Medium Voltage metal-enclosed switchgear and associated transformer operation and electrical equipment maintenance.
5 years demonstrated experience with NFPA 70E and OSHA 29 CFR 1910.269 with regards to Safe Work Practices in a Medium Voltage Environment.
Experience using computers for record keeping and communication; ability to quickly write presentable reports and memoranda using a computer.
This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid).
The salary for this position is $63.86 hourly.
This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.
This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
Salary will be predetermined based on collective bargaining agreements and set rates.
