Organizational Overview
Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) is seeking an internationally recognized science leader with a demonstrated record of high achievement in leading-edge scientific research and management to serve as the Director of Brookhaven National Laboratory.
Brookhaven Lab delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation's future. One of 10 national labs primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science, Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and 75 years of pioneering research.
The Laboratory's 2,600-plus staff members lead and support diverse research teams that advance DOE's missions, addressing the nation's energy, environmental, and nuclear challenges through transformative science and technology solutions. Brookhaven Lab's current initiatives include nuclear science, energy science, data science, particle physics, accelerator science and technology, quantitative plant science, and quantum information science.
Brookhaven Lab staff build and operate unique research facilities and tools used by interdisciplinary teams of scientists from Brookhaven and other national labs, academia, and industry. These facilities include the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider--the only operating particle collider in the U.S.; the National Synchrotron Light Source II--one of the brightest sources of light on the planet; the Center for Functional Nanomaterials; and the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory.
In fiscal year 2021, the Laboratory attracted 4,400 facility users and guest researchers from across the U.S. and from countries around the world. The Laboratory also offers robust STEM education and workforce development programs that serve more than 30,000 students and teachers annually.
The Laboratory Director reports to the Board of Directors of Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) and serves as Brookhaven Lab's primary liaison to the DOE's Office of Science. The Laboratory Director oversees an annual budget of more than $700 million from the DOE and other governmental agencies. The Laboratory Director also leads the Lab's Policy Council, the senior management team that establishes strategies to ensure safe and productive pursuit of the Laboratory's multiple scientific missions and simultaneous excellence in Science & Technology, Operations, and Community Relations.
The Laboratory Director works closely with the BSA Board and its committees, the National Laboratory Directors' Council, the DOE, elected representatives on the local, state, and federal levels, and local community leaders to ensure the success of the Lab's mission and strategy.
