Job Summary: | The University of Wisconsin, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health, a leader in Family Medicine research, teaching, and service, is seeking a Family Medicine physician who is a trained health researcher with a successful track record of peer-reviewed publication and grant funding.
The preferred candidate will have demonstrated success in obtaining external funding, will excel in effective and positive communication, be able to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary research teams across the department, medical school, university and the state, as well as independently. They should be familiar with quantitative and qualitative research methods, data collection and analysis, and summarizing and publishing research findings. The ideal candidate will be looking to lead their own project, collaborate across departments, publish extensively, and develop new research initiatives. More experienced candidates will be expected to provide research mentoring to junior faculty and fellows. For those with clinical training, there will be opportunity to see patients or perform other clinical duties.

Responsibilities: | This faculty researcher will have responsibilities that include 60-80% FTE in research and 20-40% FTE in clinical care and clinical teaching. Teaching will include various learners, such as medical students, residents, fellows and others, in clinical and research settings.
The successful candidate will be an integral part of a departmental community health initiative designed to bridge the gap between academic medicine, clinical medicine, the health care delivery system, and the community. They will join a group of DFMCH faculty who conduct research in focus areas including, but not limited to, community based participatory research, alcohol and/or substance misuse and use disorders, respiratory infections and infectious disease surveillance, integrative health, health disparities research, obesity prevention, interprofessional primary care teams, health care literacy, artificial intelligence in primary care, value-based care and primary care service. The candidate will meet regularly with research team members to develop and submit grant proposals for external funding, oversee grant activities, supervise and participate in data collection and analysis, and examine project results, develop human subjects protocols, collaborate in the preparation and writing of progress reports and publications, and in the presentation of the research project at local, regional, and national meetings. The faculty will be expected to participate in professional, public, and university service and faculty governance appropriate to the faculty rank and carry leadership responsibilities.
The successful candidate may provide consultative support and expertise for statewide DFMCH faculty and stakeholders regarding community research and evaluation methods. There are excellent opportunities to collaborate with a group of health services researchers within the department, across the Madison and the UW System Campuses, the State Department of Health Services, and Wisconsin communities through the Department's Statewide Clinical Campus. Education: | Required Terminal Degree MD or DO |
Qualifications: | Wisconsin medical licensure required prior to start date. Certification by or eligible for certification by American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) or American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians (AOBFP). Successful completion of a fully accredited Family Medicine Residency Program.
Strong candidates for this position will have completed a research fellowship and have research interest and experience in community-engaged or community based participatory research, health services research, public health research, primary care research, or related areas. A proven track record of pursuing and successfully obtaining extramural funds and publication in peer-reviewed journals is of benefit to an applicant, as is experience in leading research teams including, but not limited to health services, community health, public health, primary care research, integrative health, health disparities, or substance misuse and use disorders.
This position is available to researchers in the beginning of their career, mid-career, or senior-level researchers who are ready for a leadership role.
Appointment at rank other than Assistant Professor will require that candidate meets criteria for the tenure rank at UW-Madison. Additionally, UW School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines apply for appointment at full or associate professor rank. |

The University of Wisconsin Department of Family Medicine and Community Health (UW DFMCH) is a large, tier-one clinical department in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH). Ranked fifth in the nation among academic family medicine departments, DFMCH and its associated UW Health clinic operation has over 750 employees, including 171 faculty and an additional 261 clinical adjunct faculty located throughout the state. The DFMCH is committed to patient care while also offering outstanding educational and research programs. Over 150 residents and more than 400 medical students train in the department each year. In FY2021, our physicians and residents practicing at 17 clinics throughout the state managed over 338,000 patient visits, an integral part of the department's success. Research funding from the NIH and other state, federal and private sources exceeded $7.8 million in FY2021 and supported several areas of interest including major research projects in pain management, addiction and substance misuse prevention and treatment, and infectious disease surveillance.
