In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $70,000 - $125,000. RESEARCH CURATION LIBRARIAN, 2022
New York University Libraries is seeking two librarians to support a growing program focused on data and software curation, data and code management, and research assets stewardship. These tenure-track appointments support the needs of computational research and teaching across the disciplines at NYU. They work as integral members of our Data Services department, which seeks to grow and sustain a rapidly evolving set of services that span the full research lifecycle, including data finding and access; statistical, geospatial, qualitative, and text data analysis, training, and consultation; and data and software management, preservation, and publication.
The Research Curation Librarians support the Division of Libraries and university researchers in making their software and data available via our institutional repositories in accordance with FAIR principles, including curating and describing materials with an equitable and anti-racist practice, advancing inclusive governance standards (e.g. CARE), and supporting open and accessible workflows and tools. They will work with patrons, library colleagues, IT partners, and content providers to ensure that resources are curated, organized, preserved, and discoverable. The Research Curation Librarians will work as part of a team of research data management librarians, research software engineers, and digital preservationists to coordinate institutional repository and storage systems, curate data and code, and set relevant policies.
On a day-to-day basis, these positions will join with others on the team in providing:
Collaborative service around our joint IT and Division of Libraries infrastructure for institutional repositories, with a focus on stewarding data and software provided by researchers for deposit in fulfillment of FAIR principles.
Curation work that includes data transformation, software code review, and documentation that supports user deposits.
Policy planning and development for our institutional research infrastructure.
Responses to patron requests for help in deposit and self-curation.
One-on-one, group, and classroom consultation, and instruction on good practices and standards for managing, organizing, and transforming research materials for publication in NYU or other repository infrastructure, including those required to align with funder requirements.
Links between patron-facing services and our development leads in designing systems that help users manage and publish their research materials.
Contribute to the daily service operations of Data Services, including instruction, consultation, and liaison duties to selected programs based on need and research-specialty background.
This position reports to the Head of Data Services in the Research & Research Services subdivision and operates in close coordination with other partners in Scholarly Communications & Information Policy, Digital Scholarship Services, and the Digital Library Technology Services group.
Faculty Librarians also explore their own active research agendas and contribute their expertise, experiences, and investigations to build new knowledge in their chosen areas.

NYU Libraries' Politics of Space cluster looks outward and imagines expanded capacity for urban economics, policy, and education disciplines, moored by holistic support for data analysis and visualization across the disciplines at NYU, while our Health and Scientific Literacy cluster seeks to engage in research discourse focused on profound disparities around health and scientific literacy, access to information, and the politics of information. Both these cluster hires anticipate a burgeoning need for information and research technology expertise for those in urban studies and health disciplines at NYU, areas of emphasis for the University, and strong users of our services for researchers.

The typical beginning annual base salary for a faculty member joining the Division of Libraries as a Full Curator in the academic year 2022-2023 is $100,000.
The typical beginning annual base salary for a faculty member joining the Division of Libraries as an Associate Curator in the academic year 2022-2023 is $90,000.
The typical beginning annual base salary for a faculty member joining the Division of Libraries as an Assistant Curator in the academic year 2022-2023 is $84,000.
The typical beginning annual base salary for a faculty member joining the Division of Libraries as a Library Associate in the academic year 2022-2023 is $80,000.
Minimum one graduate degree (master's level or higher) for consideration. A second graduate degree will be required for tenure review. One of the two graduate degrees for tenure must be an ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent.
Experience in curation-focused work, including but not limited to data and/or software archiving and preservation, metadata and data transformation, reproducibility and reuse, or data description.
Willingness to identify, learn, and apply new technologies for curation work.
Experience with reviewing data and code files to determine curation needs.
Ability to work effectively with colleagues and consult with patrons in a collaborative environment.
Commitment to principles of inclusive, equitable, and open curation practices and frameworks.
Knowledge of how to transform and manipulate data using computer tools such as a scripting language, ability to work with data delivery systems.
Familiarity with metadata standards related to the description, access, and preservation of data and software.
Basic familiarity with one or more software packages for statistical, geospatial, qualitative, and/or text analysis that would typically be used by members of the research community (examples include, but are not limited to, tools such as SPSS, Stata, Python, R, ArcGIS, Atlas.ti, MaxQDA).
Experience working across organizational boundaries and managing complex relationships to move projects forward.
