The Naval Postgraduate School invites applications for an intermittent faculty position as a Faculty Associate-Research (AD-3) in the Energy Academic Group (EAG).  This position will be non-tenure track. The position will work with a variety of disciplines across NPS, the Navy and DOD and help to support continuous warfighter-integrated operational energy technology innovation and acceleration.  Energy technology innovation and acceleration includes both research and educational efforts to improve both warfighter operational energy effectiveness and the greater operational energy and installation energy innovation ecosystem.  Ongoing Energy technology innovation and acceleration integrates both operational war-fighters tasked with powering the fight, as well as operational energy researchers and technology developers (to include academic institutions like community colleges).  Ongoing energy technology innovation and acceleration will be facilitated by a small scale, mobile operational energy experimental environment for researchers to collect experimental data on the performance of different technologies for distributed generation, energy storage, and power distribution and novel bulk energy conversion and novel fuel production. The position is also expected to support the development of relevant curricular material for the education of future Navy and DOD leadership.

The mission of the Energy Academic Group is to assemble and maintain an interdisciplinary group of NPS faculty and staff that provide coordination and awareness of the group’s energy activities at NPS. These “three pillars” include Education, Research, and Outreach.

Minimum Qualifications:  

• An earned graduate degree in a discipline that supports the research line and departmental thesis needs.
• Extensive background and knowledge in the assigned subject matter area and a record of conducting scientific research involving new or emerging technologies or principles.
• Demonstrated ability to lead project efforts and to work with student researchers.
• Experience in the venture capital community.
• Experience in working with early-stage startups.
• Ability to attain a TS/SCI security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Post Master’s work, preferably in an area that is part of NPS’s educational and/or research programs, such as energy security or innovation and national security.
• Candidates should have relevant experience, within industry, non-profit organizations, government, or higher education, in developing and delivering programs and curricular material and executing research in the areas of:
  • Intersection of operational & installation energy, innovation and national security
  • Impacts of innovation on operations, including platforms, systems and energy availability
  • Participating in innovation ecosystems at the national and international levels
  • Engaging DoD, Navy and Marine Corps leadership to identify needs, problems, and opportunities for innovation in operational and installation energy and developing the innovation ecosystem for accelerating solutions to such needs
  • Supporting the effort to build the energy innovation and acceleration ecosystem at NPS and incorporate it into NPS curricula and designated training and education programs.
• Candidates must provide evidence that they have the capability of developing and delivering programs and curricular material, executing research, and publishing and presenting in the areas of: Intersection of operational & installation energy, innovation, and national security; impacts of innovation on operations, including platforms, systems and energy availability; and technology and policy related to unmanned systems.
• Candidates must show experience in building partnerships among diverse disciplines and professions.
• Graduate-level teaching or professional training experience in classroom and/or virtually.
