The Head Coach is responsible for, but not limited to, the development, leadership and administration of the women’s ice hockey program. This includes recruiting qualified student-athletes for a competitive team within the New England Hockey Conference, practice organization and supervision, staff hiring/development, game scheduling, budget oversight, student-athlete development, academic monitoring, coordinating fundraising and community service events, and positive alumnae relations.
The Head Coach is responsible for compliance with NCAA, Conference and University of Massachusetts Boston rules and regulations. The Head Coach along with his/her assistant(s) may be required, upon a successful Registry of Motor Vehicles background check, to drive passenger vans for team travel. Participation is required in University and UMass Boston Athletic Department sponsored events such as Open House and the annual golf tournament.
Examples of Duties:
Train varsity women’s ice hockey team for intercollegiate competition at a competitive level both within the conference and nationally;
Develop and implement annual, seasonal, monthly, weekly, and daily plans for practice and player development;
Develop and implement successful game plan;
Maintain and increase knowledge of ice hockey training and coaching techniques;
Supervise the training, development, and work of all staff personnel;
Schedule facilities as needed with the Assistant Athletic Director for Facilities;
Provide an opportunity for annual evaluations with student-athletes;
Attend all staff meetings and division-wide meetings;
Ensure that all practices are conducted in a professional manner according to UMass Boston and NCAA time requirements;
Recruit and evaluate high school and college athletes, both domestically and internationally, within college admissions and NCAA Division III guidelines;
Recruit, retain, and monitor student-athletes who are academically prepared for the academic demands required of students at UMass Boston;
Schedule, coordinate, and supervise official and unofficial visits of prospective student-athletes;
Develop and manage recruiting database;
Help with ensuring NCAA progress towards degree requirements and working with student-athletes on achieving academic success and eventual graduation from UMass Boston. This includes monitoring student-athlete academic progress and performance and assisting with academic plans for individual student-athletes as necessary’
Counsels team members in academic and personal matters; consults with college administration for resolution of problems.
Comprehend and embrace the NCAA Division III philosophy emphasizing balance of academics and athletics;
Maintain and have thorough knowledge of NCAA, conference, and institutional rules and regulations;
Report any alleged violations of NCAA, conference, or institutional rules and regulations;
Adhere and assist in the development of the women’s ice hockey budget;
Adhere to departmental procedures relative to purchasing and travel expenditures;
Assist with the coordination of team travel and logistics, including vehicles, lodging, and meals;
Develop fund-raising programs to augment operations budget;
Develop/maintain alumnae communication plan;
Organize outside community centered activities for team members and staff;
Accept additional duties assigned by the Athletics Director and/or Senior Associate Director of Athletics;
The position reports to the Senior Associate Director of Athletics and will include a secondary assignment dependent upon the successful candidate’s credentials and expertise. Possible assignments would be athletic administration, game day management, etc.
Bachelor’s degree and 1-3 years college coaching experience required; Master’s Degree preferred.
Head coaching experience preferred.
Demonstrated ability to lead, develop and coach student-athletes at the scholastic or collegiate level is preferred.
Previous playing experience preferred, along with an understanding of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the New England Hockey Conference bylaws, rules, and regulations preferred.
Knowledge and experience in managing fundraising activities preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of and the understanding and ability to apply and instruct sport-specific skills, techniques, and strategies;
Demonstrated ability to recruit qualified student-athletes at the collegiate level successfully;
Ability to identify and accomplish professional development opportunities for self;
Strong oral and written communication skills;
There is a strong commitment to customer service.
Must have a valid driver’s license, a good driving record and the ability to drive vans to and from contests and practices. Driver’s license must remain valid throughout the duration of employment in the position
