The Research Computing Technology Analyst position is situated within UNCW's Information Technology Services group and works directly with research faculty to support their projects and related technology. The Analyst works with a diverse group across multiple disciplines supporting custom software, hardware, and workflows used by each principal investigator and their team. The Analyst provides technical assistance on software packages, working in concert with systems administrators to deploy physical or virtual hardware while ensuring the software meets the needs of the research team. The Analyst works in tandem with the IT Security department to design, implement, and document security plans for data and information system security, in compliance with University regulations and industry best practices. The Analyst assists in the preparation of grant proposals by providing technical input on existing UNCW computer systems and capabilities. The Analyst assists with strategic planning and design of research cyberinfrastructure systems. The ideal candidate must be a self-starter with an aptitude for learning new technology, programming languages, and working in unique environments while also displaying polished communication skills and interacting comfortably with research faculty.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Relevant baccalaureate or post-baccalaureate degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience, dependent upon level of responsibility and authority.
Bachelor's degree in life sciences with 3+ years of hands-on IT experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting consumer off-the-shelf (COTS) and custom software applications or an Associate's degree and 4+ years of IT experience installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting consumer off-the-shelf (COTS) and custom software applications.
7+ years of hands-on experience with research software platforms.
Experience with high-performance computing clusters.
Experience with architecting, designing, and implementing research computing solutions.
Experience with NIH/NSF grants.
Experience with database management systems (e.g. SQL, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB).
Experience with data governance and data management plans.
Experience using Linux and Windows operating systems in a clustered, cloud, and/or virtualized environment
Experience writing and debugging scripts in Python, PowerShell, Matlab/Simulink, and/or similar other languages.
Experience with database management systems.
Experience with virtual computing.
Experience with cloud computing.
Experience with network attached and cloud storage.
Excellent written and oral communication/presentation skills.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:
Infrastructure & Operations Services is responsible for the planning, installation, management and support of UNCW's central computing and storage infrastructure in addition to its voice and data networks. This includes the infrastructure supporting advanced research computing, distance education and other academic initiatives. Network Communications including telecommunications, networking infrastructure both wired and wireless, firewalls, and VoIP.
