VICE PRES/ACADEMIC SUPPORT (BL-VPAS-IUBLA)

The VPSL oversees 21 intentionally connected departments that both direct and support the academic and co-curricular needs of students and IUB. The Office of Student Life consists of the following units:

Health and Wellbeing- Student Health Center, Counseling and Psychological Services, Health Promotion, Recreational Sports, IU Outdoor Adventures, Substance Use Intervention Services, Sexual Violence Prevention and Victim Advocacy

Student Care and Advocacy- Accessible Educational Services, Bias Response and Education, Crimson Cupboard, Student Advocates Office, Student Care and Resource Center, Student Conduct, Student Legal Services, Veteran and Military Students

Involvement and Belonging- Residence Life, Student Involvement and Leadership Center, Sorority and Fraternity Life, Indiana Memorial Union, IU Corps, Bradford Woods, First-generation and low-income student support programs

These departments employ nearly 600+ full-time staff and faculty, along with 1,000+ part-time student/community staff and comprise a combined budget of $30+ million. The office collaborates with multiple partners but works most closely with academic deans and the offices of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion; Enrollment Management; Graduate Education, International Services; IU Police, and Undergraduate Education, in fulfillment of the commitment to student success.

Indiana University Bloomington (IUB) seeks a dynamic, collaborative, knowledgeable, and forward-looking leader, skilled at building trust and cultivating strong relationships, to serve as the inaugural Vice Provost for Student Life (VPSL) at IUB. The position has a dotted reporting line to IU's university-wide Vice President for Student Success.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Sets the strategic vision and direction for the Office of Student Life, in alignment with the IUB 2030 strategic plan and IU's collective commitment to student success.
• Assists in creating a campus culture that promotes the academic achievement and personal development of all 47,000 IUB students (undergraduate, graduate, and professional).
• Cultivates an equitable, inclusive living and learning environment.
• Advocates on behalf of students.
• Assists with institutional initiatives and crisis response.
• Maintains positive and productive relationships with alumni and donors.
• Fosters collaborative relationships among students, faculty, and staff.
• Reports to the IU Bloomington Provost and Executive Vice President and serves on the Provost's leadership team.
• Works with senior administrators across IU campuses as the Bloomington campus's primary representative for student life.

General Responsibilities

• Provides leadership and supervision for the planning, organizing, and coordinating of the Student Life units while achieving institutional goals and objectives including oversight of development and submission of internal and external reports, assessment and evaluation of programs, and initiates improvements.
• Ensures that the operations of the units fulfill the academic mission of the University.
• Develops, implements, and coordinates campus and community-based programs that meet the varying needs of a diverse and global student population on a dynamic and historic 24-hour residential campus.
• Promotes a welcoming and accessible campus culture that includes 13,000+ campus residents, over 400 student organizations and community partner agencies, 8,000 sorority and fraternity members across four councils, and nearly 400+ staff that reside on campus.
• Works directly with students and student groups to provide support, advocacy, and resources.
• Provides oversight of student conduct, restorative practices, and conflict resolution.
• Designs, implements, maintains, and as needed evolves an organizational structure and staffing model to effectively accomplish the organization's goals and objectives; oversees recruitment, training, supervision, professional development, and evaluation of office staff.
• Establishes and implements short and long-range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures; monitors and evaluates programmatic and operational effectiveness, and effects changes required for improvement.
• Collaborates with academic and campus leaders on campus-wide initiatives and interventions to promote student success and create more equitable experiences among diverse student populations and groups.
• Partners with student-facing leaders on other IU campuses on shared opportunities and resources to support student success.
• Assists with campus-wide crisis and emergency response and provides support to students and families in emergency situations.
• Acts as the Provost's liaison to the IUB Student Government and the Graduate and Professional Student Government associations.
• Participates in fundraising and cultivation efforts with key donors and funders, in collaboration with the IU Foundation and campus partners.
• Anticipates and stays abreast of emerging issues, promotes strong professional development for the region and staff, and remains professionally involved and active in research, scholarship, and the student affairs profession.

EDUCATION

Required

• Doctorate degree, PhD or EdD (preferably in higher education administration, organizational leadership, educational leadership, or related fields)

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

• 10 years of progressive leadership experience at a college and/or university in student success, student affairs, student life, student services, student engagement, or student wellbeing

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
