Salary: $77,768 - $101,095 per year

At the GS-9 lead level, the MIT (Diagnostic Ultrasound) functions as a senior technician. The lead MIT is expected to perform all vascular ultrasound procedures including the most complex, and non-routine and to make the appropriate adjustments in established procedures and techniques to obtain the results required for clinical diagnosis and documentation. At this level the technician must have the ability to perform ultrasound guidance, intraoperative vascular examinations, renal, celiac, mesenteric, and abdominal ultrasound examinations, transcranial duplex, as well as other ultrasound imaging exams, as needed. In addition, vascular ultrasound studies such as cerebrovascular duplex, upper and lower extremity arterial duplex, upper and lower extremity venous duplex, and non-imaging examinations such as pulse volume recordings and TCP02 exams must be performed. The lead MIT assists other staff in performing difficult examinations, encourages other staff to sit for boards and to maintain the proper amount of CMEs to keep licensure current. The lead MIT is the vascular PAC's administrator. The lead MIT is expected to maintain current registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) and/or the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Ultrasonography (ARDMS), as well as maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. This is a requirement for vascular lab accreditation.

Requirements:

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
• Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level, which is directly related to the duties of the position to be filled, and must fully meet the KSAs at that level. This would be specialized experience which demonstrates possession of the knowledge required in order to provide all aspects of diagnostic ultrasonography services. Examples of Specialized experience comparable to the next lower grade include: perform diagnostic ultrasound examination on multiple areas of the body, including, but not limited to, the abdomen, pelvis, transvaginal, chest, small parts, thyroid, breast, and scrotum; performing vascular studies such as vertebral, renal artery, aortic aneurysm, portal-systemic shunts, etc.; assisting radiologists with biopsy procedures determining the location, depth, and required needle angle for the lesion to be sampled; and assisting in surgical procedures and fluid aspirations.
• Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  1. Knowledge of the more complex examination and treatment procedures and techniques in order to provide training and supervision in these procedures, to evaluate and initiate performance improvement projects, and to write policies, procedures, and protocols that pertain to diagnostic ultrasonography.
  2. Knowledge of JCAHO and other regulatory requirements.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees at varying grade levels.
  4. Ability to manage and supervise employees.
  5. Ability to provide, or provide for, staff development and training.

• Certification. Registration by Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) is highly desirable. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are also desirable.
