Reporting to the Manager of Outpatient Hospital Coding, the Outpatient Hospital Coder will be responsible for translating documentation, reports, and procedural notes into ICD-10-CM/HCPCS/CPT while adhering to coding guidelines, Institute specifications and all government/carrier requirements.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Communicate directly with physicians to ensure that clinical documentation is coded timely, accurately and in compliance with CMS guidelines and national correct coding initiatives.
• Assist in staff training, educational sessions, and participates in team meetings as requested by management.
• Review patients encounters for accurate code assignment of all relevant diagnosis, procedures, and modifiers.
• Maintain coding knowledge and skills through attending continuing education activities and reviewing pertinent literature, attending institutional coding meetings, AAPC/AHIMA seminars, and other educational forums.
• Resolve coding edits/denials by performing second review of medical record documentation and code assignments.
• Assign appropriate modifiers and apply guidelines as indicated through the limited coverage diagnosis (LCD), as well as the national correct coding initiative (CCI).
• Collaborates with Patient Accounting to solve denials, billing, and coding issues.
• Meet or exceed department production and accuracy standards.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

• Strong skillset in coding of ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS.
• Thorough knowledge of CMS (Medicare and Medicaid) and commercial payers??? billing, Coding, and documentation guidelines.
• Possess strong knowledge of anatomy/physiology, pharmacology, and medical terminology
• Knowledge of CMS (Medicare and Medicaid) and commercial payers??? billing and documentation guidelines required
• Ability to remain current on coding and billing regulations as well as any CPT, ICD10 or HCPCS updates.
• Ability to be a dependable self-starter, able set priorities, manage multiple data needs, and meet appropriate deadlines.
• Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication and organizational skills.
• Strong attention to detail and highly organized
• Strong team player with ability to work well independently and as a group
• Ability to work under pressure, multi-task and meet deadlines
• Ability to be flexible and adapt to changing work assignments.
• Strong computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, data entry, research, reporting, and accessing multiple hospital-wide systems.

MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education:

• High School Diploma or GED.??

Minimum Experience:

• 2 years coding experience required.
• ICD-10, HCPCS and CPT coding, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology experience.
• Must be proficient in more complex medical coding preferably including (but not limited to) Hematology/Oncology, Infusion, and hematology/oncology-based transplant coding.

License/Certification/Registration:

• CCS/CPC certified required.
