The Connecticut Mirror (www.CTMirror.org) is a local journalism success story with huge momentum and ambitious growth goals. CT Mirror is a nonprofit, non-partisan, online news organization covering public policy, government, and politics in Connecticut. Our full-time staff includes 16 journalists, three business team members (Publisher, Director of Philanthropy, and Engagement Officer), and an audience engagement specialist.
We have an immediate opening for a Director of Membership who will grow our 2,100-person, $250,000 membership program into a 5,000-person, $500,000 membership program in four years.
Overall Job Responsibilities:
Plan, execute, and evolve our two major annual fundraising campaigns (spring and year end), plan and execute monthly flash campaigns, and manage member engagement and retention efforts.
Convert members (gifts of less than $1,000) into “major members” (gifts of $1,000 to $4,999).
Plan, organize, and execute all virtual and in-person “live journalism” events.
Specific Job Responsibilities:
Small dollar fundraising campaigns to raise recurring and one-time gifts (under $1,000):
Analyze data to develop overall campaign strategy and identify target audience segments.
Use knowledge of CT Mirror news product and peer successes to develop concepts and themes and to write copy for each campaign.
Oversee graphic designer’s work developing visual campaign assets.
Send campaigns through Mailchimp, raise awareness of campaigns through onsite modals / calls to action, onsite ads, and social media posts, as appropriate.
Track campaign progress.
Work with Engagement Officer to maintain donor / member records within database and provide ongoing member service.
Regularly review and update membership drip campaigns
Develop and distribute member email updates and monthly Publisher’s Report.
Identify opportunities for membership growth through innovation.
Major members:
Conduct proactive phone and email outreach to convert $500 to $999 members to major members throughout the year, and particularly during our two major annual campaigns.
Collaborate with the Director of Philanthropy and Engagement Officer to identify members with the potential to give gifts of at least $5,000.
Live Journalism:
Create and execute in-person live-streamed member events and Zoom-only virtual member events, in consultation with our house moderator and editorial staff. Elements include concept, format, venue, and member experience.
Promote all events through email, onsite, and social channels.
Work with outsourced technology team to manage in-person live-streamed events. Engineer all virtual events.
Work with sponsors to co-promote events and to maximize sponsorship value
Other:
Work with Audience Engagement Specialist to optimize audience strategies to maximize potential members.
Work with analytics consultant to track and communicate key performance indicators (KPIs) related to CT Mirror’s membership to improve and keep board and staff updated on performance
Required Qualities:
A serious news junkie who cares about the future of civic journalism and who has a passion for enterprise journalism that covers policy, government and politics
A willingness to learn, a burning curiosity, an instinct to innovate, and a hunger to work in a fast-paced environment
Ability to draw conclusions from data sets and use them to shape future segmented fundraising campaigns, member retention efforts, and event strategy
Excellent writing ability and strong project management skills
Natural collaborator and tenacious self-starter
The confidence to ask for advice when needed
Preferred Experience:
At least three years of experience in a membership, audience, digital marketing, communications, or reporting role in a professional journalism environment
Hands-on experience analyzing customer data or web analytics.
Hands-on experience with an email management tool like MailChimp, a CRM software tool like Salesforce, and a donation processing tool like Stripe or PayPal
Other desired skills (but not required):
Working knowledge of Canva or other graphic design tool to create newsletter and graphic content
Understanding simple video and audio editing software to adjust event media files
Familiarity with a member survey tool like Survey Monkey or Google Forms

The Director of Membership position is based in our Hartford, CT newsroom and reports to Publisher Bruce Putterman. The selected candidate will be expected to be in the office at least three days a week.
