Description of Duties:
Position reports to the Chair of Fine Arts and is responsible for providing instruction in Choral Music and Theater Arts, producing at least one mainstage production each semester, and also providing instruction and mentoring to students in topics determined by instructor interest and expertise as well as student and community needs. This instructor will serve as artistic director of all campus vocal, choral and theatrical endeavors, select and rehearse level-appropriate works for performing groups, and direct groups as part of regular public performances as determined in NCSSM’s Fine Arts Series. The instructor will serve as the primary resource for students pursuing advancement in voice performance as well as theater techniques and performance The instructor will maintain or establish contacts with community groups and promote collaborative artistic efforts that support or enrich the NCSSM drama program, cooperate and coordinate with other NCSSM Morganton Fine Arts faculty and local arts organizations, and support the overall drama curriculum by teaching assigned courses and developing curriculum for course offerings.
Other Duties Include:
Develop and communicate to students clear course objectives and goals;
Plan and develop an instructional program that helps students assimilate specific course content and skills;
Hold office hours or tutorials as outlined by the department;
Schedule and lead rehearsals,
Regularly monitor and evaluate students’ progress, providing them with resources and feedback on their performance;
Structure and manage an environment conducive to learning and artistic expression;
Model for students responsibility to self and others;
Effectively collaborate with colleagues at both the Morganton and Durham campuses;
Follow the school’s philosophy, policies, and procedures;
Write college recommendations for as many as 15 students each year, as requested;
Participate in departmental, faculty, and all-staff meetings as able;
Participate in professional development and personal intellectual growth activities;
Participate in one or more of the following activities:
Provide information, service, and expertise to other schools and organizations;
Assist students on special projects, independent and individual study, and seminar-based studies;
Participate in the admissions process by recruiting, selecting, and advising prospective students;
Participate in NCSSM alumni activities;
Provide assistance for school-sponsored programs and extracurricular activities.
About Fine Arts at NCSSM:
NCSSM nurtures students of all levels of experience in the visual arts, drama, and music. From beginners to veterans, NCSSM students create, perform, and exhibit their arts. Since most of NCSSM’s fine arts courses do not count among students’ five required core courses per term, many students take fine arts offerings as an enriching complement to their courses in STEM and the humanities. Retirement: Required participation for all employees working 3/4 time or more. Option (1) Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS) requires 6% of gross salary. Employees are vested for retirement after 5 years. Option (2) The Optional Retirement Program (ORP) requires 6% of gross salary. Employees in ORP are vested after 5 years of participating in ORP. As a participant in either retirement program, you are automatically covered for short-term disability (eligible after 1 year of service/no cost), long term disability (eligible after 5 year of service/no cost). Death benefit of minimum $25,000/maximum $50,000 based on previous 12 month salary (eligible after 1 year of service/no cost).
Supplemental Retirement Plans: Supplemental retirement plans provide an additional opportunity to help you reach your retirement goals. Supplemental Plan offerings such as a 401(k), 403(b), or 457(b) on a Roth (after-tax) or pre-tax contributions from several different vendors.
Health Insurance: Employee only coverage under the State Health Plan (PPO) is provided to employees that work 30 or more hours a week. The cost is determined by the type of coverage elected by the employee. Dependent coverage is available by payroll deduction.
Voluntary Group Term Life Insurance: Securian (This is an after-tax plan and is portable)
Longevity: Payable to SHRA employees after 10 years of creditable state service (EHRA employees are not eligible).
Tuition Waiver: Three courses per academic year tuition free (at any of UNC 17 campuses that offer courses) for permanent full-time employees. Under Educational Assistance, tuition reimbursement may be available for attendance at Community Colleges provided courses taken pertain to current job or upgrades current job skills.
State Employees Credit Union: Membership welcomed. Contact the SECU Credit Union for information.
Community Service: 24 hours leave credited each calendar year (prorated for part-time) unless you choose the Mentoring/ tutoring option – 1 hour each week up to a max of 36 hours that schools are in session as documented by the elected board of the local education agency or the governing authority of any non-public school.
Facilities: Library & Gymnasium - other athletic facilities available at no cost to employees. Cafeteria on site.

Minimum Education and Experience:
Master’s degree in Music, Music Education, Theater Education or Theater Performance. Teaching experience, preferably with advanced high school or undergraduate students.
Desired:
Successful teaching experience of a range of choral music and/or theater courses and productions, including musical solo and ensemble performance (classical and/or folk or contemporary), plays, musicals, and technical theater, preferably with advanced high school or undergraduate students. Strong collaborative piano skills and skills in vocal coaching. Strong skills in directing, producing, acting, and theater tech. Strong background in building ensemble and rehearsal strategy. Interest in outreach and commitment to the greater theater community in Morganton, North Carolina and beyond.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Successful teaching experience in a range of music or drama courses, including musical ensemble performance (classical and/or folk or contemporary) or theater production, preferably with advanced high school or undergraduate students. Strong piano and singing skills preferred. Strong working knowledge of music theory and harmony, piano or choral pedagogy, theater pedagogy, and well-developed skills in ensemble building and rehearsal strategy. Strong background and experience in theater and theater education: directing, producing, and coaching. Interest in outreach and commitment to the greater arts education community in North Carolina and beyond.
