Job Description: The Scientific Innovations in Composites and Engineering Materials group (SIC'EM) is looking to hire an individual at the level of Post-Doctoral Researcher. The position will join the Sic'em group housed within the Baylor School of Engineering and Computer Science and located at the Baylor Research and Innovation Collaborative (BRIC). This position will support the laboratory by supporting all of our efforts in Additive Manufacturing (AM) technology development including the areas of large-scale polymer composite deposition additive manufacturing, AM process modeling and simulation, and nondestructive inspection and testing of AM components. The Postdoc will work closely with other Sic'em researchers investigating similar technologies. This position will integrate into the existing group structure and the successful applicant must be able to adapt their focus based on the changing needs of the research group.
A PhD in mechanical engineering or related field is preferred. 1-3 years of experience (which can include graduate studies) in finite element methods development, composite structural analysis, and/or materials testing is preferred.
What You Will Do
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proficient in MATLAB or similar mathematical analysis software
Proficient in finite element analysis development and application and/or composite materials testing
Familiarity with a commercial finite element program - preferably ABAQUS
Familiarity with static and fatigue testing of polymer matrix composites
Familiarity with polymer matrix composite structural damage and defect mechanisms
Familiarity with non-destructive testing is desirable, but not required
Job Expectations:
Conduct aerospace grade composite manufacturing, materials characterization, and structural testing
Support the development of composite materials analysis methods including analytical and numerical (i.e., FEA) techniques
Purchasing of manufacturing and materials testing supplies
Participate in periodic engineering design reviews to improve testing protocols and processes
Aid in nondestructive testing of laminated composites over a range of environmental conditions
Interact with researchers in NDT/NDE-based inspection
Receive technical training on the use of commercial finite element software to analyze composites and damaged composite structures
Receive technical training on the use of high value scientific equipment for testing (i.e., tensile testing, xray CT, SEM microscopy, single-probe and phased array ultrasonic testing, etc.)
Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylor's mission
Ability to comply with University policies
Maintain regular and punctual attendance
Engage with prospective industrial partners and government representatives as part of sponsored research efforts
