Vice Provost for Research and Strategic Partnerships (71100)
Location: Brooklyn
Description: Pratt Institute seeks an academically accomplished, innovative, and entrepreneurial leader to serve as its next Vice Provost for Research and Strategic Partnerships. Building on the strong foundation established by their predecessor, the Vice Provost will advance Pratt's commitment to engaged research that aligns with its strategic priorities as expressed in its Strategic Plan and Institute-wide learning goals. This position reports to the Provost.
A world-class and internationally ranked institution of higher education, college with programs in art, design, architecture, liberal arts and sciences, and information studies, Pratt offers nearly 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The Institute's impact expands beyond its 25-acre residential campus in Brooklyn to cutting-edge facilities throughout the borough, a landmark building and public gallery in Manhattan, as well as an extension campus, PrattMWP College of Art and Design in Utica, New York. Since its founding in 1887, Pratt has prioritized diversity and inclusion, welcoming students from all walks of life while developing and sustaining pathways to more equitable workplaces and careers. Pratt and its exceptional faculty pride themselves on being academically excellent as well as leaders in both in-person and online learning. Pratt students are part of a collaborative, interdisciplinary, research- and inquiry-based education that prepares them for success in creative fields and professional practice.
In this context, research is inextricably linked to developing creative solutions to pressing problems, and is often advanced through partnerships that ensure impact in the world. In the six years since its creation, Pratt's Office of Research and Strategic Partnerships has achieved remarkable successes, launching a 20,000sf Research Yard at the Brooklyn Navy Yard; partnering in the co-design of a high school to advance social justice through art and design education; and ensuring Pratt's place as a core partner in the New York Climate Exchange, a research and educational hub located on Governors Island, that is poised to establish New York City as the global leader for the most pressing issue of our time: climate change.
In the richly generative environment of the Research Yard, the Office of Research and Strategic Partnerships develops research accelerators and new research centers, and also oversees the Institute's current centers, which include the Pratt Center for Community Engagement; the Center for Art, Design and Community Engagement, K-12; the Spatial Analysis and Visualization Initiative (SAVI) and the Sustainability Center. The Office of Research and Strategic Partnerships also works with the Institute's six schools to support their research priorities, and supports individual faculty research from conception through funding. Research from all of these groups is showcased in an annual Research Open House that last year featured the work of over 50 Pratt faculty, staff, and students, and attracted almost 500 visitors. Grant and contract funds raised annually currently average $7.5m, and considerable additional support has been raised for major external partnerships.
The new Vice Provost will build on this work, developing and advancing a vision for the next stage of the Institute's Office of Research and Strategic Partnerships. They will join a highly collaborative and collegial leadership team in the Provost's office, and will supervise a small team of their own, as well as oversee the Institute's research centers and spaces.
