The School of Environment and Natural Resources is committed to living up to Ohio States Shared Values, which includes bolstering Diversity and Innovation and upholding Inclusion and Equity. Our aim is to recruit, support, and retain a scholar that will conduct research on ecosystem-level processes that occur within human-impacted streams, rivers and/or wetlands. To that end, we encourage applications from scholars whose research includes, but is not limited to, ecosystem consequences of biological community structure, nutrient cycling and stream metabolism, and ecosystem processes at the watershed scale and/or at the interface of aquatic and terrestrial systems. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally recognized, extramurally funded research program that integrates training of graduate (PhD and MS) and undergraduate students. We are particularly interested in applications from individuals with diverse life experiences and whose scholarship demonstrates a commitment to interdisciplinarity across research, teaching, and service.
We are seeking candidates with a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach courses that are required as part of the Environmental Science major. Potential courses could include Stream Ecology, Wetland Ecology and advanced courses depending on area of research focus. Development of a graduate-level course in the candidates area of expertise and in line with the needs of the school is also a possibility.
Faculty and students in SENR (which sits within the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Science) have access to many resources, including the Olentangy River Wetlands Research Park, Pomerene Forest Laboratory, OSUs Stone Laboratory on Lake Erie, Waterman Farm, among others. The successful candidate will have opportunities to engage with these resources, and the many opportunities for collaboration with water focused faculty, staff and extension associated with the CFAES Wooster Campus, OSUs Sustainability Institute, Ohio Water Resources Center, Byrd Polar & Climate Research Center, Arts and Sciences Aquatic Ecology Lab, the NOAA funded Ohio Sea Grant Program, Global Water Institute.
Performance Objectives
Teach approximately 2.5 courses per year. Demonstrate an ability to cultivate learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds, and commitment to enhancing diversity and inclusion within the School of Environment and Natural Resources and related professions. Develop and/or expand an independent research program in Stream and/or Wetland Ecology including presenting research results at national and international meetings, securing extramural funding, and producing impactful publications. Advise graduate and undergraduate students, including the School of Environment and Natural Resources and honors students. Work collaboratively with university faculty and staff, School of Environment and Natural Resources and/or OSU extension, government agencies, non-government organizations, and/or community groups to advance the land grant mission of the college and university. Serve the School of Environment and Natural Resources, university, and professional communities through committee work and other appropriate responsibilities and activities.
Education and Experience Requirements
Required:
- Earned Ph.D. in a relevant field to Stream and/or Wetland Ecology, including Ecology, Freshwater Ecology, Environmental Science, Aquatic Biology, Systems Ecology, among others.
- Demonstrated interest in and/or experience with teaching, recruiting, mentoring, and advising diverse underserved students, including women, students of color, first generation, and non-traditional students.
Desired:
- Post-doctoral experience is preferred; however, ABD candidates who have completed all degree requirements except defending their dissertation may also apply.
- Evidence of potential for excellence in teaching is preferred.
- Given the interdisciplinary nature of the school, a demonstrated interest in interdisciplinary research and collaboration with both in natural and social sciences is also desirable.

Department/School Information
The School is dedicated to applying science to better understand and address pressing environmental and natural resource management problems. Our programs are led and delivered by faculty and staff with expertise in various aspects of aquatic ecology and water resources, environmental social sciences, forestry, rural sociology, soil science, and wildlife ecology. The School offers 5 bachelors degree majors serving over 800 undergraduate students: Environment, Economy, Development and Sustainability; Environmental Policy and Decision Making; Environmental Science; Natural Resource Management; and Forestry, Fisheries, and Wildlife. The School strives to prepare students for professional careers at the intersection of fields such as sustainable resource management and environmental policy; across a broad domain including research, education, and communication. Graduate programs serve over 140 combined students in a certificate program, a Master of Science program, a professional practice Master of Environment and Natural Resources, or a Ph.D. program. The School is actively engaged in serving numerous external stakeholders through extension and outreach efforts. The Schools active research portfolio is a mix of applied and basic research across a wide range of disciplines, including biophysical sciences (soil science, forestry, fisheries, aquatic sciences, wildlife, and ecosystem restoration) and social sciences (sociology, political science, psychology, decision-making and risk sciences). Our research attracts support from federal and state agencies, private industry, and foundations, with total research expenditures exceeding $4 million annually.
