Minnesota State University Moorhead has received the Department of Education (DOE) grant to fund our Yellow Ribbon Student Success Center. The funding amount awarded is $453,424 to be implemented over a period of three years (FY2022-2025). The purpose of the Veterans Resource Outreach Director position is to provide leadership over this grant which will include implementation of the project goals, maintaining grant compliance with reports, technical trainings, attending mandatory conferences, and working collaboratively with the program manager from the Department of Education.
The Director is also responsible for managing the project budget, marketing the program, implementing MSUM Yellow Ribbon Strategic Plan, and leveraging various strategies to recruit and retain military veterans and military connected family members. This role will report to the Provost and Senior VP for Academic Affairs at MSUM and have a direct report associated with this grant.
The MSUM Veterans Resources Outreach Director directs, plans, and organizes all veterans' services initiatives. The Director sets and leads the university's vision, goals, and objectives for becoming the preferred choice for higher education for active and retired military-connected individuals. The Director reports to the Provost & Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs.
Building upon MSUM's current Veterans Resource Center, establish a Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success as the single point of contact coordinating comprehensive support services for veteran and military-connected students. Serves as the Center of Excellence for Veteran Student Success Outreach Director, overseeing the development and maintaining of healthy relationships with Campus, Community, Military, Government, and Corporate Partners, overseeing and implementing MSUM Yellow Ribbon Strategic Plan. The Director will monitor the strategies and interventions of the program for increased enrollment, retention, graduation, and employment placements.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree plus 4 years of experience providing services to veterans or other student populations, or alternatively, a Master's degree plus 3 years of experience providing services to veterans or other student populations. An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the degree requirement.
Knowledge of needs of military students, veterans, and military-connected students including understanding the unique challenges faced by military students in transitioning from military life to academia, knowledge of the available resources and support services for veterans on campus, and awareness of the mental health issues that may affect military-connected students.
Must have administrative knowledge, supervision, event planning, experience managing budgets, understand budget spreadsheets, and other budget management tools.
Candidate must understand the importance for diversity, inclusion, and equity and work collaboratively to create an inclusive environment for the veteran and military-connected students; ability to exhibit intercultural competency and work with diverse populations.
Must be able to work effectively in a veteran-oriented, team environment, have the ability to work under pressure, organize projects and tasks to meet deadlines, work collaboratively with other campus organizations, and work with minimal guidance.
Must have excellent organizational skills and experience in planning, coordinating, and hosting/facilitating outreach events/activities.
Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills required. Strong writing skills including attention to detail, impeccable grammar, and ability to proofread.
Must understand federal, state, and university procedures and policies for grant management and compliance. Must have a history of grant writing and management or a strong interest in grant writing.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree from an accredited institution.
Experience working with confidential information and an understanding of Data Privacy, FERPA, and HIPPA regulations.
Thorough knowledge and understanding of student record processing, and academic policies and procedures.
Ability to conduct both long-range and short-range planning.
Crisis and advising skills to recognize varied personal situations and provide appropriate information and referral.
Superior analytical and problem-solving skills with demonstrated competence in critical thinking skills.
Research and evaluation abilities sufficient to determine effectiveness of project strategies and processes.
