Position Summary
Under the general supervision and guidance of the Senior Associate Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Support Services, this position operates with a high degree of autonomy and will provide student-athlete development support in accordance with NCAA, conference, and university requirements.
The Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development is dedicated to providing programming and support for student-athletes in the development of their academic, personal, and career goals. This position will devise an integrated plan to include athletic department, campus, and community resources to provide a comprehensive program that fosters the holistic development of each student-athlete. The Assistant Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development will lead student-athlete development staff and work collaboratively with members of the Student-Athlete Academic Support Services team, campus, and greater San Diego community to ensure content of development programming ensures desirable outcomes and goals. This position will focus on high impact practices that positively influence the retention, eligibility, and personal development of student-athletes from matriculation to graduation. This position will play a key role in cultivating prospective donors to secure resources to support the goals for student-athlete development and the vision of the Aztecs Going Pro program.
This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, at-will position. This position is designated exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation. Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
The individual hired into this role will work on campus at SDSU in San Diego.
Department Summary
The Department of Athletics, utilizing the services of over 150 employees, is responsible for the intercollegiate athletics program at San Diego State University. Currently, there are 18 sport programs, approximately 550 student-athletes, and 17 offices in the department. The offices include the following: The Aztec Club/Development, Administration, Athletic Medicine, Business Office, Compliance, External Corporate Sales, Equipment, Event Management/Facilities and Operations, Human Resources, Information Technology, Marketing, Media Relations, Strength and Conditioning, Student-Athlete Academic Support Services, Ticket Office, and Video.
Student-Athlete Academic Support Services provides a wide variety of professional services and activities ranging from pre-admission guidance and diagnostic testing to admission to the university through post-graduation. The purpose of the program's services and activities is to assist and support student-athletes in achieving high academic success, personal growth and development while progressing toward a degree objective. This is accomplished by utilizing the services of academic advisors, other Academic Support Services support staff, and other resources of the university. Services and activities include a specialized student-athlete orientation, pre-admission advising, referrals to campus resources, academic improvement sessions, tutoring, individual academic competency, eligibility advising and guidance, and life skills training. This position reports to the Executive Associate Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Academic Support Services.

Education and Experience
Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public, or business administration or a job-related field. Additional specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the necessary knowledge and abilities may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Experience: Equivalent of five years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth. A master's degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
Key Qualifications
Previous experience teaching in a formal setting to include any of the following is preferred: classroom instruction, classroom management, curriculum development, and establishing learning objectives and goals.
Proven skills and success in collecting and analyzing data, curriculum advising, and program development.
Excellent organizational, and leadership skills.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, and excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective relationships with administration, faculty, coaches, parents, student-athletes, constituents within the university, and the university community.
Proven experience cultivating donor support to enhance programming needs.
Must have ability to work some evenings and weekends and travel.
University employees that have direct job responsibilities involving intercollegiate athletics are expected to have knowledge and understanding of NCAA, conference and University rules, policies and procedures governing intercollegiate athletics. Additionally, he or she is required to notify the appropriate personnel of any knowledge of, or should have known of any violation or suspected violation of NCAA, conference or University regulations.
