The Ohio State University seeks qualified candidates for a 9 month, tenure-track faculty position within the Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering. The position will concentrate on Research (50%) and Instruction (50%). Tenure faculty (regardless of rank) - persons with the titles of professor, associate professor, assistant professor and instructor who serve on appointments totaling 50% or more service to the university and who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. Duties and responsibilities are assigned in accordance with the workload guidelines laid out in the pattern of administration of each faculty members tenure initiation unit (TIU) and, as appropriate, regional campus; obligations will include research, service and/or teaching or clinical practice. These faculty will have earned doctorate or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study or possession of equivalent experience. The successful candidate will teach courses related to the development of biotechnology. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a nationally and internationally recognized research program supported by extramural funding. The successful candidate will provide leadership in research areas of high priority for the growth of biotechnology beyond medicine, including applications in materials, chemicals, agriculture, sustainability, energy and the environment, as well as innovative new areas for the application of biotechnology.

Candidates should have a demonstrated track record of commercialization and new venture creation, mentoring entrepreneurs and innovators, new venture launches and scaling, and/or building partnerships with investors in the marketplace. This position is partially funded via a recent JobsOhio-Ohio State initiative to increase the number and diversity of STEM graduates.

Qualifications: Education and Experience Requirements
Required:
Earned Ph.D. in Biological Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline or in biological science with at least one (preferably undergraduate) degree in engineering.
A record of excellence in teaching, advising, and curriculum development.
A record of extramural grant funding and research collaborations.
Evidence of potential for excellence in research and teaching.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a willingness and ability to work closely with diverse groups of academic (e.g., students, staff, faculty) and practitioner communities.
Interest in and/or experience with teaching, recruiting, mentoring, and advising diverse underserved students, including women, students of color, first generation, and non-traditional students.

Desired:
Recognition as a nationally and internationally recognized scholar with an excellent record of productivity.
History of developing and teaching innovative undergraduate and graduate courses in biological engineering.
Experience with curriculum development for undergraduate biological engineering programs.
Demonstrated excellence in advising and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students in research activities.
Track record of working collaboratively with university faculty and staff, government agencies, non-government organizations, industry partners, and community groups to advance the land grant mission.
Registration as, or eligibility to become, a Professional Engineer.
Experience developing and working in interdisciplinary research teams.
Experience with commercialization, creating start-up businesses, and/or industry collaboration.

Minimum qualifications include an earned PhD in agricultural, biological, or chemical engineering, or closely allied program. Registration as a Professional Engineer or demonstrated eligibility is desirable. It is essential that the candidate has good knowledge of biological systems; excellent speaking and writing skills; ability and desire to work in interdisciplinary, interdepartmental teaching/outreach and research teams; and ability to teach engineering students at the undergraduate level. Preferred qualifications include experience developing or working in interdisciplinary research teams, experience with commercialization and/or creating start-up businesses, and experience in mentoring members of underrepresented groups.

The Department

FABE is located on two campuses: Columbus and Wooster. It includes a diverse faculty of 26 tenure-track professors, with eight members holding joint appointments with other academic units. FABE offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering as well as undergraduate programs in Agricultural Systems Management and Construction Systems Management. Total enrollment in FABE exceeds 470 students. U.S. News and World Reports ranks FABEs undergraduate program 8th and graduate program 10th, nationally. Research areas include bio-based materials, renewable energy, urban and agricultural water management, food processing and safety, digital agriculture, remote sensing, controlled environment agriculture, indoor air quality, waste recycling, and agricultural health and safety. FABE faculty are highly regarded for their teaching, research and extension and outreach programs. Annual grant and contract expenditures for the academic unit exceed $6M.
