Job Description: The Department of Drama within the College of Visual and Performing Arts at Syracuse University seeks to hire an accomplished, dynamic, and visionary leader to serve as its chair with a preferred start date of July 2025. Initial appointment will be for 5 years and is renewable upon concurrence of the provost and dean. The ideal candidate should possess a significant national or international reputation as a theater artist or arts administrator, and their expertise and experience should have prepared them to lead a professional theater training program in a rapidly evolving professional world. The chair oversees the department's on-campus academic programs as well as its signature study-away programs in New York City and Los Angeles; the chair must also closely partner with the leadership of Syracuse Stage to foster the unique Syracuse Stage/Department of Drama relationship.
The successful candidate will be expected to cultivate a positive, inclusive, and collaborative environment within the department for faculty, staff, and students, and represent the department to the broader institution and community. The chair will value equity and inclusion and have experience guiding students, performers, and/or colleagues of diverse identities; and their leadership, pedagogy, and creative activity will celebrate marginalized voices and perspectives.
About the Department of Drama The highly ranked professionally oriented department is housed in an R1 research university and is uniquely integrated with a major regional theater. The department has an enrollment of approximately 260 undergraduates, 22 full-time faculty (on-campus), 50 part-time faculty (on-campus and in NYC and LA), and 2 support staff, and offers BFA degrees in Acting, Musical Theater, Theater Design & Technology, Stage Management, a BS degree with a primary track in Theater Management, and a Theater Minor. Qualifications: Terminal degree in theater or a closely related field and an established record of experience in the profession at the very highest level of accomplishment. A proven record of high-quality creative activity, scholarship, and/or professional accomplishment commensurate with the appointment as full professor.
Job Specific Qualifications:
Responsibilities: In consultation with the faculty and staff, the chair will provide fiduciary, creative and academic leadership, and will communicate related initiatives to the dean's leadership team. Academic leadership: Responsible for the department's academic and strategic leadership. Provide oversight of the organization and development of courses and curriculum and oversee the academic requirements for each degree program including scheduling and supervision of course loads and curricular offerings in the unit. Collaborate with faculty and appropriate partners at Syracuse Stage in the process of curating and producing a diverse and engaging season of productions, workshops, and other initiatives that support the department's academic mission. Monitor national and international industry trends as they relate to professional training and advocacy for the department. Student welfare and advisement: In consultation with the director of academic and career services, ensures that students have access to meaningful academic and career advising, and to appropriate services that promote wellness and address their concerns. Personnel functions: Recruit, supervise, and evaluate departmental personnel; recommend faculty loads. Tenure and promotion: Make recommendations to the dean and appropriate college committees regarding promotion, tenure, and other faculty matters.
Budget and facilities: Oversee the development and management of departmental budgets, including allocation of resources in support of teaching, creative, and scholarly activity; oversee allocation, use, and maintenance of equipment and space assigned to the department; make recommendations concerning faculty and staff salaries. Recruitment: Engage all faculty and staff in recruitment efforts by working collaboratively with the VPA Office of Recruitment and Admissions. Assessment: Ability to oversee the processes of curriculum design, development, assessment and certification, including meeting the expectations of the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). Fundraising: Collaborate with VPA Office of Advancement to engage prospective donors to support strategic initiatives in the department. Engage alumni and collaborators across the university to support the strategic goals of the department.
