The Omega group in the Physics Department at BNL is looking for a mechanical technician to participate in the construction, installation, and commissioning of a silicon-strip detector for the ATLAS HL-LHC Upgrade. In this role you will be collaborating with an international and multicultural scientific community and working closely with scientists, technicians, engineers, and students at BNL, domestic institutes, and international institutes such as at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.
The Omega Group focuses on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. BNL is the host laboratory for the U.S. ATLAS Operations Program, the U.S. ATLAS HL-LHC Upgrade Project, an ATLAS Tier-1 computing facility, and is designated as part of the U.S. ATLAS Support Center. The group has leading roles in the ATLAS HL-LHC upgrade projects for the silicon-strip detector, liquid argon calorimeter readout, and trigger/data acquisition electronics and has strong R&D programs on trigger/data acquisition, high-performance computing, and silicon detectors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assembly of delicate silicon-strip components in a clean room environment
- Operation of complex laboratory equipment such as microscopes, wirebonders, computer controlled linear stages, and metrology machines
- General mechanical and electrical support. Examples of such support are:
- Making cables
- Gluing small assemblies of small components
- Machining mechanical components
- Building mechanical structures for electronics systems
- Building cryogenic and mechanical systems
- Record keeping of inventory and fabricated components. Data is entered into a custom database or in Google documents.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
- a BS degree in a technical field and 2 years work experience or;
- a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 6 years experience or;
- a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 7 years relevant work experience or;
- 8 years relevant work experience.
- Proficiency with machine shop tools
- Ability to understand drawings
- Basic understanding of configuration control, QA and QC (Quality Assurance and Quality Control)
- Knowledge of operating and debugging test systems with both mechanical and electronic components
- Knowledge of test stand construction with a focus on the mechanical and cryogenic systems
- Basic knowledge of Windows computers and applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Ability to understand and follow BNL safety principles
- A demonstrated strong work ethic and the ability to take initiative on assigned tasks and projects
- Ability to work collaboratively with a small team of technicians, engineers, scientists, and students
- Hands-on problem solving skills
- Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:
- a BS degree in a technical field and 4 years work experience or;
- a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years experience or;
- a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 9 years relevant work experience or;
- 10 years relevant work experience.
- Experience working on equipment for a nuclear or particle physics experiment
- Experience working on complex assemblies of scientific/technical equipment using specialized tools
- Experience with LabVIEW and similar applications
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
- Arm/hand dexterity
- Lift (up to) 30 lbs.
- Good vision and hearing, mental sharpness, alertness

- This is a fully onsite position located at BNL
- Some (< 5%) domestic and international travel should be expected
- Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $79200 - $95000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
