Job Description: The Syracuse University School of Art, within the College of Visual and Performing Arts invites applications for two (2) full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in painting beginning August 2025.
The scope of both positions involves teaching undergraduate and graduate courses offered by the Studio Art Program; developing and maintaining a strong professional presence, demonstrated through service to the Program, School, College, and University, as well as making appropriate contributions to the discipline. Position 1. Realist, Representational, Figurative Painter teachingrealistic and representational techniques, including portraiture, figure painting, and landscape painting. Expertise in anatomy, proportion, life drawing, light, and shadow, gesture and character, as well as classical and contemporary realist techniques, fostering students' ability to capture human form and emotion in painting.
Position 2. Abstract, Non-Representational, Contemporary, Experimental, Painter teachingabstract and non-representational painter, emphasizing form, color, texture, abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction, contemporary experimental techniques, and experimental/interdisciplinary practices in painting, including mixed media.

Qualifications:
MFA in Painting or related field required.
A strong candidate will have at least three years of college/university level teaching experience beyond the T.A., an active exhibition/presentation record, and knowledge of contemporary theory and practice.
Experience in curriculum development and program supervision.
Teaching experience with a successful track record of working well with students from diverse cultural backgrounds and with varied technical expertise and aesthetic sensibilities.
Job Specific Qualifications:
Expertise in various styles and techniques of representational including but not limited to realism, figurative art or abstract/nonrepresentational painting including but not limited to non-figurative art, non-objective art, and non-representational art.
An impressive track record of achievements within the realm of painting, substantiated by a portfolio of exhibited pieces, published works, printed materials, and ongoing projects that align seamlessly with the candidate's creative pursuits.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a deep understanding of contemporary painting and drawing practices and contribute to the school's interdisciplinary and forward-thinking vision.
Ability to teach across Studio Arts areas, introduce diverse and contemporary perspectives reflecting both national and international transformations in painting practice.
Familiarity with contemporary art practices and the ability to integrate traditional and contemporary approaches in teaching.
Knowledge of the history of fine art as a foundation for forward-thinking explorations - both technical and creative.
An understanding of painting and art in the context of broader social, cultural, economic, scientific, and technological dynamics and issues.
The ability to communicate clearly and mentor students.
An ability to connect the painting program to the professional art community facilitating opportunities tailored and suitable to students' interests and abilities in illustration and art.
An interest in working collaboratively within the School of Art, the College of Visual and Performing Arts, the University, and with external partners towards the development of shared projects and initiatives.
Communication skills and cross-cultural abilities that maximize effectiveness with diverse groups of students, colleagues, and community members.
Responsibilities: The School of Art offers degrees in Illustration (BFA, MFA) and Studio Arts (BFA, BS, MFA). The successful candidate will:
Possess excellence in research and active professional practice in the field of art and/or related fields.
Teach introductory through advanced level courses at undergraduate and graduate levels in the Painting Area, with a current teaching load of 3/2, subject to adjustment based on enrollment demand.
Mentor and advise students.
Pursue teaching excellence from course preparation and delivery to students in support of their learning, to providing adequate assessment through critical feedback and mentoring.
Contribute to course and curriculum development to enable the school to continue to build academic excellence.
Engage in service to the School, College, and University, through participation in meetings, committees, and recruitment.
Cultivate and nurture interactions and opportunities in the professional field of art and/or related fields.
