ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW
The BNL Physics Department leads nuclear and particle physics experiments both onsite, and in collaborations around the globe, that probe the secrets of the universe.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The BNL Physics Department currently has an opportunity for a Mechanical Technical Specialist (T-2) to work in the sPHENIX group on the sPHENIX Detector. The sPHENIX detector is a state of the art, 1,000 ton instrument used to make fundamental nuclear physics measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory.
In this role you will work under the supervision of scientists, engineers and senior technicians on the maintenance, repair, testing and operation of the sPHENIX detector, which will involve a wide variety of highly skilled technical tasks. Work assignments will require a high degree of proficiency in technical skills and techniques in assembly, testing and operations in support of sPHENIX. You will have a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work with a team of technicians, engineers and scientists to maintain and repair, as necessary, mechanical detector components of the sPHENIX experiment. sPHENIX detector components to be worked on include Hadronic and Electromagnetic Calorimeters, a Time Projection Chamber, Silicon Strip and Silicon Pixel detectors, Minimum Bias detectors and Event Plane detectors.
- Work with a team of technicians, engineers and scientists to maintain and operate ancillary support systems for sPHENIX detector including gas systems, cooling systems, safety systems, and electronic rack systems.
- Work will require assembly and disassembly of sPHENIX detector components, and ancillary support systems. Job responsibilities will include the operation of rigging equipment, lifting fixtures, mobile cranes, building cranes, forklifts, vertical lifts and cherry pickers.
- Preparation of any tooling and/or fixtures necessary for the assembly, disassembly, maintenance and operation of sPHENIX detector or support components.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires a High School diploma or equivalent, and
- A BS degree in a technical field or
- A technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 4 years experience or
- A technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 5 years relevant work experience or
- 6 years relevant work experience.
- Experience working with hand and power tools for both large assemblies of equipment, as well as fine work on experimental equipment
- Proficiency with machine shop tools
- Ability to understand mechanical drawings
- Basic understanding of configuration control, QA and QC (Quality Assurance and Quality Control)
- Ability to understand and follow BNL safety principles
- A demonstrated strong work ethic and the ability to take initiative on assigned tasks and projects
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires a High School diploma or equivalent, and
- A BS degree in a technical field and 2 years work experience or
- A technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 6 years experience or
- A technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 7 years relevant work experience or
- 8 years relevant work experience
- Experience working on complex assemblies of scientific/technical equipment using specialized tools
- Experience working with a diverse team of technicians, engineers and scientists
- Experience working on equipment for a nuclear or particle physics experiment
- Basic computer skills using MS Office applications
Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:
- Arm/hand dexterity
- Ability to climb ladders at low to moderate heights; work with confidence at heights that can exceed thirty feet
- Lift (up to) 50 lbs.
- Good vision, mental sharpness, alertness and function in confined spaces
- Will need to operate heavy equipment including mobile cranes and forklifts. Rigging and hoisting tasks will be performed.

- Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $72050 - $90000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
