Data Manager - Student & Campus Life
Student and Campus Life (SCL) inspires transformation in all Cornell students on their journey of individual, academic and personal evolution. Our division is comprised of leading student affairs experts who support our campus on pressing student life matters including public service, health, wellness, social justice, residential living, food services, sports, recreation, career services, and student activities and organizations including sorority and fraternity life. We provide support and services to roughly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on multiple campuses in the U.S. and abroad.
Within the Division of Student and Campus Life (SCL), the SCL-OVP financial and operational support team ensures the effective deployment of Information Technology, Facilities, Accounting, Data-Driven-Decision Capabilities, Risk Management, Management/Financial Reporting, Data and Business Analytics, and Financial Planning support services to departments within the division. Working collaboratively as integrated cross-functional partners, leaders from the SCL-OVP support team strive to enhance day-to-day operational effectiveness, deliver timely business reporting and information to stakeholders, manage key divisional processes and steward financial and capital resources on behalf of the SCL-VP.
Supporting the SCL Data Office, the Data Manager is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, consistency, and reliability of SCL data assets is documented, organized, and maintained. Being a team player and collaborate with the Associate Director of Data Governance, this position works closely with business stakeholders and technical partners to implement data governance standards, data asset documentation, curate, and maintain a comprehensive data catalog, and foster a culture of data stewardship across the organization.
Data Cataloging and Asset Organization:
- Curate, document, and organize organizational data assets to facilitate seamless access and usage.
- Tag data assets in alignment with policies related to data privacy and usage.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to implement data classification schemes, maintain business metadata standards, and enhance data discovery and retrieval processes.
Metadata Management and Standardization:
- Develop and maintain data asset repositories and dictionaries to create/support unified Master Data views.
- Standardize metadata formats and taxonomies to improve data understanding and cross-functional interoperability.
- Harvest metadata from diverse sources to enrich the organization's data catalog and promote a unified view of data assets.
Data Governance and Quality Assurance:
- Support the Associate Director of Data Governance in defining and monitoring data quality metrics to maintain data integrity and security.
- Assist in making informed decisions about data endorsements, deprecations, and compliance with governance policies.
- Enforce data governance standards and ensure adherence to privacy and security protocols.
Data Stewardship and Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Promote a culture of data stewardship by advocating for best practices in data management across the organization.
- Lead training sessions and awareness initiatives to educate teams on governance principles and tools.
- Provide hands-on support for communication, training, and change management efforts tied to data governance across departments.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics, Information Systems, Library and Information Sciences or related field plus 3-5 years of relevant work experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.
- Experience in the following areas: Data curation, business glossary documentation, data governance, business analytics and reporting. Understanding or exposure to data lifecycle management, metadata management and data cataloging tools.
- Able to work with subject matter experts across different teams to improve definitions of business terms and make specialized knowledge easier to understand for other stakeholders
- Can identify definitional conflicts and recommend approaches to resolve them Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with data governance, technical or business metadata.

- Strong analytical, creative problem-solving, and process management skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills.

- Proactive flexible attitude with a desire to learn new skills in the growing field of data management.
