Old Dominion University seeks a transformational leader to serve as the next Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Old Dominion University(ODU), located in Norfolk, is Virginia's forward-focused public doctoral research university. With more than 24,000 students, ODU serves a diverse student body where more than half the students are from underrepresented groups. With 31% of students receiving Pell Grants, more than 30% being first-generation college students, and 33% taking classes fully online, ODU's commitment to both campus and online learning for its student population, has led to it being nationally recognized for its role in ensuring access to higher education and providing its students with the opportunity for social mobility. Finally, located near 15 military installations, ODU reflects the community's tradition of service, and 29% of its student body are veterans and military-affiliated, with 4.5% on active duty.
With a faculty consisting of nationally and internationally renowned leaders in their disciplines, ODU is a top R1 research institution offering rigorous academics which continues to expand and deepen its impact across critical academic disciplines. Home to an energetic residential community and robust initiatives that currently contribute $3.8 billion annually to Virginia's economy, ODU is a leader in the Commonwealth of Virginia. With over $63 million in extramural research funding from local, state, federal, and private funding sources and more than half of its faculty members involved in such funded research, ODU serves as a leader in complex discoveries, scholarship, and problem solving which positively impacts local, regional, and national areas of expertise.
Reporting to President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D., the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs will join a dynamic and highly collaborative leadership team, and work to set a vision for academic affairs that aligns with the University's 2023-2028 Strategic Plan, "Forward Focused: Where Innovation Meets Possibilities." A core goal of this plan is to advance academic excellence, and the Provost will work with the students, faculty, and staff to ensure ODU is a leading institution in the Commonwealth of Virginia in developing and offering relevant, signature academic programs that educate students for their future and meet regional and global workforce needs. The Provost must be a champion of faculty success and an active participant in the shared governance process. They will further work to pursue excellence through student success and enhancing faculty and staff achievements.
Old Dominion University's next Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs will be an experienced, student-centered, engaging, communicative, courageous, and proven leader who embraces forward-thinking strategies to anticipate and advance innovation in teaching, research, and service. The ideal candidate will have experience managing complex budgets, specifically integrating budget decisions into strategic planning, The ideal candidate will also have experience supporting faculty research and development needs at an R1 university. The Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs must be a proven collaborator with direct experience promoting excellence in education, as well as the networking, financial, and entrepreneurial skills required to work successfully with a wide range of individuals and constituencies across the University and beyond. The ability to collaborate with the Faculty Senate and faculty constituent groups, as well as across administrative/divisional units, is also essential. The Provost must understand tradition but have a record of innovation. Experience with state governing agencies and accreditation bodies is expected. The Provost will have earned a terminal degree in an established University discipline and scholarly achievements commensurate with a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor.
