Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility. The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the "glue" that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC Ion-Ion collider. It will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one producing an intense beam of electrons, the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which are steered into collisions. Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the Electron-Ion Collider will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.
Position Description
This position is for a seasoned electron polarization expert to optimize polarized electron transport and storage in the EIC complex. Electron polarization is a key feature of the Electron-Ion Collider, and absolutely crucial for a large fraction of the physics program. The required degree of polarization is very high (70 percent), which requires careful analysis and optimization of the machine design.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide reliable estimates of electron polarization in the electron storage ring (ESR).
Optimize orbit bumps and use other tuning knobs to optimize polarization in the ESR.
Perform aforesaid tasks with minimal oversite and regularly report on progress.
Transfer expertise.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Bachelor's and 20+ years' experience, or Master's and 15+ years' experience, or Doctorate and 10+ years' post-PhD experience. (Degrees in Physics or related discipline.)
At least ten (10) years of related work experience with demonstrated expertise in electron polarization.
Expertise in all requisite computer codes such as MAD, SLIM, BMAD.
Excellent understanding of radiative polarization in general.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Other Information:
Brookhaven Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $152700 - $253500 / year. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
