Responsible for managing operations of the University of California Davis Neuropathology Core and reporting to Dr. Brittany Dugger (leader). Performs duties for on-call brain autopsy program including carrying a cell phone and/or pager when on duty, responding by phone to calls 24/7 within 10 minutes of being called, reporting for duty at procurement facility within one and a half hours of being called, receiving the body from the transport company according to standard protocols, dissecting and processing the brain and associated samples according to standard protocols, and completing all documentation related to the autopsy. Responsible for updating information in all appropriate databases.
In addition to brain procurements, person will manage resources inventories, decide request priorities, re-allocate brain bank materials/data in coordination with other Cores within the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center, and oversee brain procurement daily business. This includes but is not limited to coordination, management, and maintenance of brain and tissue banks, performing tissue-related technologies, storing and tracking tissue samples, providing tissues to researchers, maintaining databases, assuring adherence to workflows, performing quality control measures as well as miscellaneous supporting work for the laboratory operations under the supervision of Dr. Dugger. The tissue specimens include but are not limited to: postmortem human, rodent, and non-human primate brain tissue, blood samples, cerebrospinal fluid samples, and DNA/RNA and cellular samples. This position will have responsibility for night and weekend calls as part of the duties of a coordinator of our brain autopsy program. Coordinate with other team members to maintain a perpetual inventory of specimens, and prosections. Maintain critical donor records and other legal documents. Maintain compliance of Program with state and federal statutes, as well as University system-wide and local policies.Responsible to coordinate with team to determine educational needs and participate in educational endeavors within the University and the surrounding community.. Applies extensive knowledge of laboratory protocols and processes to lead major program components of a brain donation program. Preforms full range of all aspects of the Neuropathology core. Demonstrates good judgement in allocating anatomical materials, as required by the clinical educators, researchers and clinics. Provides training to staff and students, provides and presents training materials. Develop materials for presentations, training materials, and reports.

Qualifications

CA Drivers License in good standing.
CA Funeral Director's License or the ability to obtain one within 1 (one) year.
Required to hold a valid California driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
Graduation from an ABFSE accredited Mortuary Science Program.
Two (2) or more years of relevant experience technical experience.
Two (2) or more years of relevant experience technical experience in preparation techniques for long-term preservation in autopsy like dissecting or recoveries to create specialized anatomical specimens, database entries and performing quality control/quality assurance protocols.
Knowledge of Microsoft office suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, outlook) knowledge of pc or mac operating systems knowledge of working in a biohazardous workplace, including handling of blood borne pathogens, formaldehyde monitoring and storage of hazardous materials.
Demonstrated computer skills in using database registry.
Solid interpersonal skills to develop relationships with peers, faculty, student and donor families.
Theoretical knowledge of human anatomy, biology and physiology.
Skills to perform dissections and preparations for anatomy study in an efficient and skillful manner.
Knowledge of California law governing organ donations, California business and professions code demonstrated knowledge of funeral cemetery, and crematory codes.
Skills to communicate with faculty, students, staff, prospective donors and the general public regarding the use of anatomical gifts and anatomical materials.
Demonstrated knowledge of California health department regulations on vital statistics and experience filing death certificates and disposition permits.
Solid skills to provide direction and guidance to less experienced faculty, staff, and students and presenting materials to students.
Preferred Qualifications
Tissue Bank Specialist Certification.
Bachelor's Degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Department Overview
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a large, diverse, multi-site department whose mission is to be scientific leaders who promote excellence through clinical diagnostics, next generation innovation, collaborative discovery and world class education in service to all communities. Acquire brain donations from the community we serve, working with local and state agencies. Create anatomical specimens from the donors; allocation of human anatomical specimens to requestors for education and research, and properly disposing of human anatomical specimens upon return of the specimens to the program.
