The Opportunity:
As a Radiation Health Physicist 1, in the Office of Research Assurances, you will support WSU's research and teaching activities involving radioactive materials and radiation-producing machines as part of the Research Safety Program team. You'll help maintain the Washington State Broadscope and Radiation Air Emission licenses-both critical for operations across WSU campuses, including the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Research Reactor, and research programs in chemistry, engineering, physics, plant sciences, and life sciences.
In this role, you will advise on radiation safety practices and assist in training faculty, staff, and students to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and WSU's license conditions. Under the guidance of the University Radiation Safety Officer (RSO), you'll contribute to a wide range of safety functions, including:
Implementing ALARA principles and facility standards
Conducting laboratory surveys and inspections
Managing personnel dosimetry, bioassays, and waste disposal
Overseeing radioactive material inventory and instrument calibration
Coordinating leak testing, shipping, and receiving of materials
You will also collaborate with the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) to uphold effective safety policies and may cross-train in other areas of research safety to broaden your impact.
Additional Information:
This is a full time (100% FTE), permanent position. Overtime eligibility dependent upon final salary placement.
Monthly Salary: $5,501 to $7,400 | Range 59 | Successful candidates are typically hired at the beginning of the salary range and receive scheduled salary increment increases in accordance with WAC 357-28.
In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications:
A Master's degree in radiological health, radiation safety, health physics or closely related field. OR a Bachelor's degree in a physical science, engineering or biological science and two years' experience in the use of radiation. A Master's degree in any of the above fields may be substituted for one year of experience.
Must have, or be able to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver's license and meet requirements in accordance with SPPM 7.10 and departmental driving standards.
Ability to drive a variety of standard University-owned vehicles.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ability work independently, with limited supervision.
Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of radiation safety, physical science, engineering, or biological science.
Experience performing laboratory research and writing/revising laboratory standard operating procedures.
Demonstrated excellence in communications, computer skills, and personal interactions.
Experience interpreting and applying regulations, policies, and procedures.
