KHRGC Racing Veterinarian
The Kentucky Horse Racing and Gaming Corporation is an independent government agency charged with the regulation of horse racing and wagering in the Commonwealth of Kentucky. We are currently looking for enthusiastic and motivated veterinarians to join our team.
Horse racing in Kentucky is growing at a rapid pace, and we are therefore expanding our team of racetrack veterinarians. We have full-time positions available to veterinarians who can operate at a high level of excellence in a rigorous, fast-paced environment. A successful candidate would have a strong interest in equine sports medicine and lameness, excellent decision-making and communication skills, as well as an ability to work well in a team setting. Ideal candidates would also be able to approach difficult situations with empathy, fairness and a calm demeanor.
Working with the Kentucky Horse Racing and Gaming Corporation as a Racing Veterinarian, you would be involved in both race day and non-race day regulatory duties for Thoroughbred, Standardbred and Quarter Horse racing in the state. KHRGC Veterinary Team responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Pre-race soundness exams on Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses
On-track observation during racing to monitor soundness and triage emergencies
Test Barn oversight with sample collection and supervision of horses cooling out
Vet’s list works and training observation
Out of competition testing
Race-day furosemide administration
The basic qualifications of a successful candidate would include:
Current or ability to obtain a Kentucky Veterinary License
2+ years (preferable) of experience in an equine sports medicine setting
Excellent communication skills and the ability to learn on the job
Comfortable using a computer to enter data and exam info
Ability to travel within the state and work holidays and weekends
Full-time KHRGC employees are entitled to full state employee benefits. We also offer part-time and interim positions for interested candidates with limited availability.
Salary: up to $92.50 / hour and ~$180,000 / year, full time.
